From my Grandfather:

Had to think about that a minute before I got it. Wise and helpful advice, especially after a tough day.

This wasn't lately but I still remember it from a while back. An engineer I worked with told me (I was a starting person) that I could learn something from anyone. That is that every person had something useful to say and that you could learn something from them. I still remember him saying that and try to practice it to this day.

Relax, don't be so hard on yourself; you've never been/done XXXX before.

This basically says that no matter what point you are at in your life or experience you are experiencing something for the first time.

This helped me immensely as I was preparing to retire from the Air Force.

My advice I give to my teen nephew: Think of your life as a storybook. At the end of it, is it worth reading? Be true to yourself, respect others, and enjoy life. Ensure a good story for your kids to read someday.

That was some advise I wish I would have listened to more closely. Broke the tip of my thumb bone off and had 3 stress fractures running down the bone to the first joint of my thumb. I think I peed just a little when that happened.

"Never ask your wife to choose between you and her family. You may not like her choice."

That was my father's advice before I married my wonderful wife of 17 years.

His other good piece of advice was related to buying 'stuff':

"If you want to buy something think about it for three days. If you still feel you really need it after the three days ... buy it. If it costs over $1000 ... make that three weeks."

I'm not always good at following that advice, but I try.

Just before a dog is getting ready to bite, they will close their mouth all the way. Then they will open their mouth quickly to bite.

Now, can you tell me how to recognize when a working dog is about to give a "dirty-bite" during a training session?

It really would be helpful, and reduce some of my first-aid/medical expenditures.

Some good quotes I've read lately:

"The difference between genius and stupidity, is that genius has its limits." - Albert Einstein

"The war is coming to the streets of America and if you are not keeping and bearing and practicing with your arms then you will be helpless and you will be the victim of evil." - Ted Nugent

"Leave no authority existing not responsible to the people." - Thomas Jefferson

"My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government." - also Thomas Jefferson

And the best one I've read lately, seems to hold very true in today's current situation where so many are making a living off of welfare and other entitlement programs. Programs that were designed to HELP people who were down on their luck, not create an entire new class of people too lazy to provide for themselves.

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." - also Thomas Jefferson

trust your eyes over what you think.

if your gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough.

if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

a fool and his money are soon parted.

if it can't be fixed with duct tape and/or baling wire, it can't be fixed. (impossible!)

life usually leaves a $100 bill on your dresser to let you know that you just got fubar-ed.

revenge is a dish best not served.

You've got to let go of the stuff

I'm cleaning out my parents house, and everywhere I turn, I can't decide what to keep, what to toss etc. There is so much (they lived in the same house for 55 years)

The problem is - what happens when you have a cabinet 5 ft by 4ft x 4ft FULL of brass and copper pipe fittings? I took a bucket full of mixed fittings home (and will probably take another bucket - but of course I don't want to just throw them away - I'd LOVE to find a plumber to come over and give me say, 10-20% above scrap for them, and TAKE them (brand new 2" bronze gate valves aren't cheap) I have a full set of pipe dies, and a pipe bench. I really don't have the room for them, and might need them once a decade. I have about 10-15 cubig feet of metal electrical boxes (Gem, Quad, Handy, extentions, EMT and BX fittings etc)

BTW, if any of you are in the NYC area and are interested in buying the "stuff" a HVAC mechanic accumulates over 50 years or so in the trade - filter driers, tanks of freon, fittings, wire, etc etc etc, PLEASE email me

There are two ways to learn:
1. By being right
2. By being wrong

The only thing achieved without effort is failure.

Anything unattempted remains impossible.

The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

And my personal favorite...
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, it is measured by the number of moments that take our breath away.

When you make a decision, stick to it, even in the heat of the moment. Fear, anger, adrenaline, hormones, and rage make a man do strange things.

Anger is Fear in drag.

Man up.

Pain is fleeting, chicks dig scars, glory lasts forever. (the replacements)

Breathe, Breathe!

Just because someone else is doing wrong, that don't make it ok for you too.

Maybe you should use a box knife. (I got a great scar!)

How will I ever get this done?
This is how. Start, don't stop.

Gun and knife are interchangeable. I'm frequently surprised by folks that were never taught this one.

I'm quite careful when elevated. I spent most of my time up there scooting on my butt. Slow and tiring but not too dangerous.

Ah, if it was only that simple.

I'd agree that "Unhappy wife : Unhappy life" is 100% true, BUT it's possible to have a Happy wife and still be unhappy (as then it only depends on you)

"A EMT once told me - I have never un buckled a dead person."

HE may never have unbuckled a dead person, but others have. I saw one on I-5 near Fresno late at night. The guy in the station wagon apparently fell asleep, went through the oleander center divider, and hit a semi head-on. A seatbelt won't save you from something like that.

But almost everything else, yes.
