I've got a survival kit philosophical question. I tend to separate my first aid supplies from my survival supplies. If I'm carrying my PSK I will always have my FAK. My thoughts have always been that I would like to use the extra space in my PSK for more fire starters, extra wire, more fish hooks etc. However most PSK’s tend to include first aid supplies. I find the first aid supplies packed in a PSK tend to be very meager. With this in mind I pack a separate more complete FAK.

Can anyone think of any potential drawbacks beside the obvious i.e. loss of a FAK or if one were to forget to take the FAK you would have no first aid supplies? I’ve been pondering this question for a while.

i seperate mine FAK from mine PSK, but i leave very few first aid items in the PSK. A seperate FAK has the advantage that usually you will have faster/easyer acces to your first aid equipment, thus saving faliable time. unwrap the tape and stuff from a PSK takes way to much time. Mine FAK is used quite often so packing it with a PSK would be very inpracticable.

I carry my FAK and PSK seperately. I have already posted the contents on this website for the FAK. My PSK is somewhat different from the usual postings here and I have not posted the contents on this site. Personally, I see no problem with carrying both seperate as I am needing items from either from time to time. I use the contents in both almost weekly. This means my PSK is not necessarily for survival in adverse situations, but rather for daily needs. A friend actually calls it my oops kit. <img src="images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I carrry two kits . Past threads with valuable input from our M.D.'s;Tustbox and Beachdoc have helped define the limits and realities of such kits. Nobody is going to set up a triage station out of a Altoids tin. What we can do and expect is to keep minor wounds such as foot blisters from turning into debilitating infections, manage pain and perhaps start a antibiotic regimen. Remember that a PSK is a last ditch assembly of the basics. There is no rule stating you can only carry one. Personally with two matching tins in my pockets I can follow a compass heading without vearing to the wieghted side <img src="images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I like the idea of an Oops Kit. I think I may borrow that moniker.
