Hello,

This was not my original idea (it was someone else's on ETS ), but I am building one to keep in the storage compartment of my enduro motorcycle, which I ride deep into the mountains, sometimes solo.

The contents list (in progress) is on my motorcycle web page: http://www.pngusa.net/~run2hills/ . Click on the "survival kit" link in the toolbar on the left.

I hope some non-survival minded motorcyclists will find it useful, and also try the link here to Equipped To Survive!

Thanks for looking,

Sorry about the busted link. Here's the text from the motorcycle site:

Besides carrying a handheld communications radio or cell phone, I highly recommend building and carrying a water bottle survival kit. Mine is a 32 ounce Nalgene bottle with the new Brunton button compass replacement lid. Nested onto the bottom of it is a stainless steel cook cup with folding handles (Olicamp- obtained at a mountaineering shop). This kit could be carried in saddlebags, or in a hipsack/daypack. The bottle perfectly water-proofs the kit contents contained inside.

BSK kit contents:

1 industrial quality garbage bag
(carried separately)

medium size, lightweight lock-back knife

2 razor knife blades

wire saw
- very lightweight finger loop saw

1 bottle of Potable Aqua tablets
- iodine water purification tabs

2 Gerber breast milk storage pouches
- extra water storage, roll up very compactly

6' laboratory tubing
- used to sip water from cracks in rock, etc

2 butane disposable lighters
- spark wheel can be used to start fires even if lighters are dead

1 bottle NATO lifeboat matches
- water and wind proof; 25 in bottle, usually $3 US

magnesium / flint striker firestarter

Fresnel magnifying lens
- backup solar fire starter device

vaseline soaked cotton balls
- for fire starting tinder

3 military hexamine fuel tablets
- can be used to cook with the cup or start difficult fires

20 foot braid of 550 lb. test parachute cord
- multi-purpose, the inner strands can be used separately; braided into a shoulder strap which also captures the cup to the bottle

freezer bag 1st aid kit
- 4 butterfly "suture" bandages
- 2 large adhesive bandages
- 1 field dressing (XL bandage)
- XS painkiller; Immodium AD
- triple antbiotic packet
- elecrolyte tablets packet

Mini Fox 40 pealess whistle

3x5" plastic signal mirror
- a backup in case both bike mirrors are smashed

waterproof paper and golf pencil

35mm film can fishing kit
- asst. small hooks
- large "gaff" hook (for landing fish/frogs etc)
- BB size reusable split-shot sinkers
- tiny float bobber
- approx. 50 ft. line (varies for region / species)
- asst. dry flies or dehydrated bait

25' brass snare wire
- for trapping / multi-purpose lashing

12" x 3' HD aluminum foil
- multi-purpose

4- 12" nylon zip ties

6 asst. safety pins

Photon II Micro-Lite
- keychain size LED flashlight powered by 2 button-size lithium batteries (10 year shelf life)

flat "roll" of duct tape
- available at Walmart $1 US

3' 3M "33+" electrical tape
- multi-purpose, wrap around something to store

Sewing Kit
- XL awl / punch
- medium needle
- 20 ft. HD upholstery thread

$20 cash

ATT / Walmart calling card
- never expires

waterproof survival instruction cards
- help remember 1st aid, etc, under stressful conditions

I could be wrong, but isn't there a water filter that is compatable with Nalgene bottles (you just screw it on where the cap goes). This could be a good option to carry, but it obviously wouldn't be able to go IN the Nalgene bottle.

Please can someone correct me if i am wrong.

PC2K I agree with you. The miniworks does screw directly onto a wide mouth nalgene. But it's just a bit smaller than the nalgene bottle itself. I don't think a big filter like this is some thing you would consider as part of a PSK. I think the bottle of potable aqua listed is the best option for this size kit.

If you wanted a filter in a kit of this size you might find this or this useful. I haven't tried either of them but the claims are good. There is also the Safe Water Anywhere inline filter. You could remove the tubing and filter from the hydration bag or carry the hydration bag in place of your breast-milk bags and your surgical tubing.

The inline filters might be a good idea because you could make a gravity feed filter system. You could fill up any odd sized container with water. It would also allow you to do other tasks while your filter is working.

Good idea miniMe
