Besides carrying a handheld communications radio or cell phone, I highly recommend building and carrying a water bottle survival kit. Mine is a 32 ounce Nalgene bottle with the new Brunton button compass replacement lid. Nested onto the bottom of it is a stainless steel cook cup with folding handles (Olicamp- obtained at a mountaineering shop). This kit could be carried in saddlebags, or in a hipsack/daypack. The bottle perfectly water-proofs the kit contents contained inside.
