Hello,

I have found a great deal on Swedish military cooksets. They're new condition for $5 US at cheaperthandirt.com, item #zrw-170 at 1-800-421-8047: terrible picture here It uses a self-pressurizing alcohol burner made by Trangia (some of you may be familiar with this brand). It doesn't come with the flame-adjuster lid like it's commercial version cousin, only an o-ring sealed cap, but I believe the burner is a little larger than the one sold in stores.

The mess kit has a 2 quart cookpot with a bale-style handle and a coathanger hook for use over open fires. The frying pan / plate / lid has it's own handle that can be lengthened by inserting a stick. The burner, a (one pint?) plastic fuel bottle, and the mess kit store inside the base, which seems like a good windproof design.

This kit is not as compact as some, and I haven't tested mine yet, but it is built very well and sold at a very affordable price. I will keep mine in my truck to heat meals, emergency heat, snow melter, water boiler, clothes dryer, oil-pan preheater on frozen mornings, etc.

Regards,
Run

I don't know why I was thinking that the burners that come with this cook-set were Trangia, except that they look nearly identical. These kits come with an SVEA burner, another well-respected stove manufactuer.

Being mil-spec it comes as no suprise that the burner that came with my friend's set was a larger size than the one which came with mine, but they are both SVEA brand.

I have a couple of these for my vehicle kits. Although not the most compact set, they work really well and come complete with everything you need except for the fuel. You can just use the bottom of the pot to extinguish the burner. I have an "authentic" Trangia burner also, and I can't really tell the difference in performance from the SVEA units.
