Unfortunately, your experience is all too common, BTDT, as has Sue, proving the stupidity of it all.

However, and perhaps I should have been clearer, in this case was attached to my keys in the tray and the TSA person actually picked it up, examined it, showed it to a supervisor who didn't hesitate to pass it.
