Funny sideline - you zots a fly in the eyes with a laser pointer, they go blind, and won't fly on their own volition for nothing. If you pick them up and toss them in the air, they just hang there hovering, they will buzz like that until they exhaust themselves without moving, even if you swing something at them, they are totally stuck. It is comical. I suspect it would be similar for most other flying insects, but I haven't the heart to test the theory any further.
Laser of sufficient power are effective at deterring racoons, mountain lions, attacking dogs, and I suspect bears skunks etc. Not as easily applied as pepper spray, but 100% effective if you get a direct hit on the retina, even if just a sweeping shot. Also proof tested.
