Yes, try Death Valley in August. Don't take pets or small children. Take five or more times the amount of water you think you'll need. CYA all the way. The further off the beaten track you go, the less likely you are to make it back. Two or more vehicles is good.
It won't be crowded -- if you see four vehicles the whole time, that is a traffic jam.
