does anyone know if the UHF/VHF radio transmissions will be affected by the analong/digital transition? will you still be able to recieve the signals from your handheld radios or recievers?

i called hamcity.com, and their tech support didnt know, but thought radio signals might still stay up because they are a different format.

A person at a Ham radio store didn't know that? Wow, that's a pretty good reason to avoid shopping there.

Won't be affected at all.

thanks JohnE.

im about half way through the ARRL ham radio license manual to become an operator and am starting to look at recievers.

im a wilderness ranger for the forest service and i want one that can stand up to punishment and is more than capable of hitting their repeaters.

what do you all think of the yaesu vx 6r? any other thoughts?

beside feeling a lot safer with it in my personal "kit" i am anxious to shed the "BRICK" that i have to use now.

perhaps i should post this on a ham forum, but im sure there are plenty here that know where i am coming from.

If you are talking about tuning your radio to the analog TV audio bands, yes, that will go away. Other stuff, no.

Oops, sorry bout that, it didn't even occur to me that you might be using a Ham radio to listen to television audio. If that's the case, then as haertig stated above you will not be able to pick up the analog signals after they actually stop broadcasting them.

As for the radio, I own a Kenwood HT, was gonna get the Yaesu VX8 but got tired of waiting for it to arrive. A friend/coworker has one and he's very impressed with it. The 6 is an older model but I would imagine it would work very well for your needs. Yaesu makes great products in general.

I wouldn't get it at the place that didn't know about picking up analog TV signals though...;^)

If you aren't lucky enough to have a local shop, try HRO online. Good company, good prices.
