The best aircraft survival tool that I can think of to have right now is to make sure that Capt. Sullenberger is your pilot...

I got through scurity with my swiss key several times before someone finally spotted it, I missed it as well, it is so much a part of my everyday.

If I know I'm going somewhere that may have a side trip, I also look to see if there is a local surplus or rental place so I don't have to lug any extra gear. Like Summit Hut in AZ, or REI sometimes, or some of the other medium box retailers.

No, we are forced to do the things we do to give the masses the illusion of safety. Pocket knife restrictions do NOTHING to prevent 9/11 v2.0

Those things that would are deemed politically incorrect.

I split my stuff between my carryon and my checked bag. I gave up trying to not check bags a few years ago if my stay is more than a day or two. I have mailed a SAK to my hotel once or twice in the past, but never used it. Don't bother with that anymore. I just relocate a steak knife from the hotel restaurant to my room for my stay and leave it there when I check out.

Why are you people jumping through hoops to cary scalpel blades and dental flosss? You are not going to crash on a mysterious island with a mysterious storyline ( I gave up on that show after 5 episodes. What WAS it all about?)
Check your normal kit in baggage or mail it ahead of you.
Airlines are private corporations. If I climb into your car and refuse to buckle up and start playing with my survival rifle-et, are we going to debate on philosophical grounds?
