Read about this.
105 miles I believe from the large city up there.

Something to worry me though if I was in that area :-X

Todd, what did you want me to read?
We have all sorts of little disasters happening or about to happen around here.

OK TeacherRO, the corrected link takes me to the volcano story now.

Edit:
Sorry Todd, I guess I misread read (Red) as read (Reed)

And yeah, if I was sitting beside something that could go off with a bang I would be a bit concerned too.

My younger DD lives in Cordova AK, just over 200 miles due east from Mt. Redoubt. She works for the Alaska Dept of Fish & Game. She forwarded me an e-mail this afternoon in which the state declared a condition "orange" and indicated that increased sesmic activity had occurred in the last hour. Part of the message follows:

"To All State Employees:

As you may be aware there has been an increase in seismic activity associated with Mt. Redoubt, located near Cook Inlet southwest of Anchorage. The Alaska Volcano Observatory has, at this time, set an alert level of “Orange,” stating “Seismicity at Redoubt has increased markedly over the last 20 minutes. Clear webcam views and pilot reports indicate that the volcano has not yet erupted.”

The message was time stamped at 17:53 EST.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory Redoubt page is at here. .

I just sent her a vehicle BOB as she had just purchased a used car. It and her trauma FAK have a number of N95 masks. Just hope she doesn't have to use them.

A year ago this kid was fighting off a flesh eating bacteria in Fiji. I'm beginning to think she would be safer in the military...

Are N95 masks effective for volcanic ash?

Never having been subjected to it I don't know, but my guess is that they are at least as effective as a bandana or a wet cloth for hopefully short periods of time.

Anyone got direct volcano experience?

I was stationed in Alaska the when Redoubt blew in 1989-90. The ash is more like grit than dust-like. You would feel the grit on your teeth and know that you didn't have your mouth covered properly. Another fear was the air filters on cars. Alot of people thought they wouldn't hold up. Another issue is air traffic in the area. We had all the F-15s and AWACS hangared. If the grit got into an engine it would be bad beans. Also, the foul sulphur smell was no fun either.
