I always enjoy trying to improvise kit out of everyday things. Sparklites out of lighters, plaited wire saws etc. I seen posts about 22. shells being used as whistles by blowing across the top. I tryed this but never managed to get a satisfactory noise out of them. The other day, using a junior hacksaw and a small file, I cut a perfect semi-circle out of the top, like on some commersial whistles, and stuffed half the end up with bluetac so that it looked similar to the lifesystems whistle and the one used in Pro Survival Kit's Micro Pro Survival Kit. Unfortunatly, when blown, not a sound issued from it. I know that this is a long shot, but does anyone know a working way of turning a 22. or even 5.56mm shell into a whistle. (I know using a 5.56mm defies the point as it is the same size as the lifesystems whistle, but it would be fun.)
Thanks

Yeah, it's so easy. You know the greek half man half goat guy Pan? And his flute thing? Well you sorta do it like that. What you gotta do is
1) pucker up like your gonna get muchas smoochas from Britney Speers, or whoever,

2) keep your upper lip out while

3)bringing in your bottom lip so that there is a small crevice between them.

4) then hold the shell or what not under your lips and gently blow.

For practice, you can also do this with soda bottles and shotgun shells. You can change the pitch by adding and subtacting water to it. More water is a higher pitch. Hope that helps.

That shot isnīt that long.
It takes a little practice but this is a way it works:

Take the shell between index finger and middle finger. It should be close to the knuckles. The open end is about even with the back of the fingers. It must have a slight downward angle with the back of the fingers. The proper position is about half the distance between the knuckles and the first joint (youīll have to experiment a little). Now make a fist and put the first joints of the fingers holding the shell to your lips. When you blow you can vary the angle untill you get a loud shrieking noise. It works with about every shell you can hold properly.

BTW:
Way back when I was a child we used to employ the caps of acorns for that (mommy couldnīt sucessfully confiscate those). That proves once again that playing is practicing surval skills <img src="images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />.

When you wish to convert the shell you have to dent the shell before cutting it open. That way the lip is in the air flow. The noise is lower than with the above method though. For this a .22 magnum shell is better than the .22 lr and itīs still smaller than the 5.56 mm.

I'm afraid I got lost at the fist part. I tryed experimenting but it wouldn't work. I also don't understand the last paragraph. Thanks for trying.
