We made the mistake of buying a minivan once. Was rear ended on a 35mph street so the person who hit us was only going about 40-45 when she hit the car behind us pushing it into us. I had stuff stashed behind the rear seat and found things under the front seats from just a minor impact. One of the rear seat latches even came a little loose. It didn't even damage our vehicle, my reflexes were fast enough that when I heard the screech and crash I took my foot of the brake so it let the force just roll us forward some. Minivans are just a poor design all around, I'm gald we got rid of ours.
Funny this topic is spooling out. I was just staring at the mini maglite, knife and whistle I had sitting out on my coin tray. I got the coins put away and the whistle stashed but the light and knife still out.
Everything else is on the floor or in the trunk.

I have a lot of stuff in my truck now but I've bought several sotrage bags for them. I use a wrench roll and tool roll, these are fabric sheets with small pockets swen that veraious wrenches and tools slide into. You then roll them up and they tie or buckle shut. I use those ties and buckels to attach them to the frames of the seats they are stowed under. Same with the GHB/first aid kit under the drivers seats, it has a carry strap that I unhook and wrap around the seat frame and then hook again so it stays put.

Fortunately, most of the things that are loose in the van are lightweight and/or large enough that they won't fit under the seats to roll through to the front. In fact, there is enough hardware/ductwork/whatever under all the seats that nothing bigger than a coin might get through in any case. IMHO, minivans have gotten safer over the years (comparing mine to the one I used to ride to school in). And I definitely did not complain about the gas mileage vs. an SUV when gas prices were up to $4/gal.
Gas mileage was another reason we got rid of ours, getting the same as an suv the same size but with all the disadvantages of the minivan unibody and front wheel drive it didn't make any sense to keep putting up with the minivan.
Everything I carry is USUALLY behind the back seat. (4dr F350) I can tell you that I am always surprised at what the kids "forgot" loose in the back seat. I usually find those objects after an emergency stop.
