I'm pretty mathematically challenged so I was tickled pink when I blundered across this site. The engineers in the bunch can probably do this stuff in their sleep, but for the rest of us... Free online calculators for engineers

I like it. I always find it a bit odd when I am sitting in front of a computer and looking for my $10.00 metric converter because I am unable to remember how many acres are in a hectare.

That's amazing. Hopefully they are accurate. Good point Ken, If you (or anyone else) finds inaccuracies in the calculations, or conversions please let me know.

I like it. I always find it a bit odd when I am sitting in front of a computer and looking for my $10.00 metric converter because I am unable to remember how many acres are in a hectare. Easiest solution in my experience for conversions of all types: http://joshmadison.com/article/convert-for-windows Even better: Use Google: Type the following into the search box: "1 hectare in acres" Returns: 2.47105381 acres. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=1+hectare+in+acres

Not better when you don't have access to the net. I'll keep my often used utilities resident on my computer where I know they'll be available when needed. YMMV. True Doug. One of the reasons I've asked Mrs Santa for the Practical Math Dictionary from Duluth Trading. Didn't get it for Christmas, but Father's Day is coming up.... maybe I need to hint a little better.

I think a lot of folks forget what its like offline. Air travel, for those of us who do it a lot, is a cone of digital silence. Well, mostly. some in flight wi fi out there now, sadly.

If Google goes down, a lot of IT people are going to be lost. No reference! I do not have one now, but I did have a wallet sized metric conversion chart. Of course, some of us younger people aren't very good at math in our heads.

Do any of those do trig functions? I'm building a set of stairs, for the first time, and I could really use a set of trig tables.

For those who are still interested in deadtreeware a handy item is a handy little book, a bit bigger than 3" by 5", that goes by the name of: "Pocket Ref" by Glover: http://www.sequoiapublishing.com/pdt_pocketref3ed.htmIt has pretty much everything in it. If I was going back in time with only what I could fit in my pockets this would go with me. Very handy for the codger who still likes books. No restrictions for in-flight use, no power needed. A power outage, or, god forbid, an EMP won't make it into a doorstop. Of course the next question is: How do you do your complex calculations without power or electronics? You could use pencil and paper for calaculations or ... Let me introduce you to a fancy bit technology, the slide rule. It was all the rage, and a badge of honor for scientists and engineers well into the sixties. The ladies near about fell over for a man who was proficient with a high precision 12" slip stick.

Pocket Ref is definitely the gold standard for all things like this! I think it contains info on just about everything!
