Guys,

I've been checking out portable power sources.

Freeloader solar charger and Sidewinder hand-cranked phone charger are the two I've seen.

The Freeloader seems good, with adapters for Motorola phones, IPods, even Nintendo DS, but the user feedback is mostly negative.

Anyone have one of these or recommend another?

Thanks,

If you are looking to go solar, look around for an RV supply store (i.e. Camping World). They have many different ways to charge and /or supply power with solar equipment.

Are you are looking for something just to recharge a cell phone, or something a bit more powerful that can charge a cell phone battery too?

As an aside, I bought a recharger by some reputable company a few years ago, and I've given up on it because companies change their input socket so often, the charger company can't keep up. I would suggest that you get a recharging system that outputs 110VAC so you can plug your wallwart rechargers into it instead of having to buy new adapters every time you change, upgrade, or get new stuff.

I've got a gel cell battery with built-in inverter to 110VAC with a solar panel plus a few cigar lighter inverters that have 110VAC outlets, so I figure I'm set.

Check out Backwoods Home Magazine, backwoodshome.com, for lots of good info about solar and other alternative energy topics. Their articles give source references and many have materials lists and plans for diy projects. One artice told about plans for a solar power trailer, towable to anywhere that provides power for any campsite. Cool.
edit: Northern Tool and Harbor Freight both have a variety of solar panels at reasonable prices.
