What I like best here is that he didn't panic (as so many others would have done). He used what tools he had available to create a shelter and signal for help.
I also like the fact that once he knew he was lost he stayed put until found instead of widening the search area and getting even more lost.
(He was only one mile from the trail when he stopped. Even in snow he might have traveled 10 miles easily, increasing the area he could be lost in from about 3 square miles to about 300 square miles.)
