Hello all,
I'll be down in Mississippi from 4-11 Jan 09 and am just starting some research about survival concerns down there. I'm in the military and will be conducting some training at Camp Shelby.
What are some of the survival concerns and issues that I should be aware of?

Camp Shelby is decidedly not one of the high points of the United States. Last time there was in 1992, and backwoods (read backwards) was the best description.
Take good rain gear, and watch out for all the camp followers. Those girls are dying to get out of that area at all cost.
PS: Generally each post in the US has a website that will have a "what to bring" section. Also there will be contact information for Range Control. If you can find someone who will give you a little time, they may have the best info you can get (especially a retired soldier/civilian employee).

Thanks Desparado.... Haha, funny you should mention rain gear, right when the Canadian Military is going through 'shortages' of rain gear...maybe I'll invest in something when I get down there. Thanks agains Ironbirdexplorer

Cottonmouth. They come in a range of colors from orange mottled to black. Petting them is not recommended. They can be grumpier than other poisonous snakes.

Thanks agains Ironbirdexplorer Why on earth, out of all the posts inside the CONtinental United States (CONUS) are you going to Camp Sh17by any way? Man, I usually try to put a positive spin on things but there just isn't one to be had this time. You must be going for an NCO school like PLDC, BNCOC or ANCOC right? You surely must have pissed the First Sergeant off in the past. Go make up to him NOW! Seriously, rain gear and watch out for the indigenous wildlife. (2, 4, 8 or no legged) If you have to provide your own rain gear and can still use it in uniform in Canada I suggest the USGI ECWCS outer shells. Good Luck

Maybe he's going to Camp Shelby for the same reason that I did in 1998,,,to borrow a couple of WW2 75mm Pack Howitzers!!

Thanks for all the posts gents. I'm going down to assist one of our Canadian Reserve Brigades who will be doing training down there. I think they go to Camp Shelby as a recruiting tool for reservists...'hey, join the reserves and we'll send you out-of-country for training!' haha!
As for combat arms training, we're pretty limited out here on the East Coast. Camp Gagetown (where I am currently posted) is one of the biggest training areas in Canada, but in a Canadian Winter, manoeuvre training is somewhat hampered.
Anyway, thanks again to all for the info. Armpit or no, it certainly will be a break from the cold and snow up here.

They send the US reserves out-of-country for training. They get wonderful hands on training in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait etc. Maybe Camp Shelby won't be so bad after all.
