Hello all,
In two months it will be my brother’s birthday. Like me he enjoyes the outdoors but the difference he hasn’t got an EDC knife. Reason being I bought it off him. So I thought it is time to get him one as well.

This is his situation:
Student, cycles to and fro university, enjoyes running and rugby, does not go out off town a lot. In his university they do not make a fuss about what you carry nevertheless he prevers to keep it hidden. He always wears a belt so it will be probably be pouch carried, weight is no problem.

I have already decided that it will probably be a multitool or a Victorinox Work. The reason why I don’t choose for the origional victorinox series is because the design is dated, no real pliers and can’t really get a good grip on it. If I do go for the V Work then the knife blade can’t be too large because he might have to use it with people around him who still think of knives as a weapon, not a tool.
Probably needle nose pliers and a decent screw set for his push bike.

All suggestions (or questions) are welcome.

What about a leatherman squirt?

I'll second Mark's recommendation for the Squirt. I have a Squirt P4, the model that comes with pliers. It's only 2 1/4" x 3/4" x 1/2", has pliers, knife, screwdrivers, bottle opener, file, etc. I work in an office, and it doesn't draw any unwanted attention. It fits in a pants pocket. I find that I use it almost every day for one reason or another. I'd hate to have to rely on it for long-term survival, though.

I just got my brother a Leatherman Micra for his birthday. He seems to be in a very similar situaation to your brother, except that he isn't into the otdoors. I was hoping for the squirt but:
1)finances (I'm a student)
2)In an urban setting, for HIM, he would use the scissors more than the pliers
3)he has hinted for a few months that "you got a real cool knife-thing, Johnny..."

Of course, the other option is to get a non-multitool knife. My dad (quite old-school) has carried a simple SAK (with corkscrew, to suit his lifestyle <img src="images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />), for a few years know. He is a DIY enthusiest, so it sees quite a lot of work.

If finances wern't a problem, i would have a GOOD look at the leatherman juice range. they seem to all the necesarry tools in one neat, colourfull and small package (in some cases)
