I started this as a reply to the fishing line question but it got out of control so I repost here as a thread starter.
I just remade my fishing kit. fits in a tic-tac box. includes:
3 bobins - 1 with 20 pound spiderwire; 1 with nylon upholstery thread (brown) ~ equivalent with 10 pound spiderwire; 1 with dacron thread ~equivalent with 4 pound line. I went with these because this way I carry over 100 yards of line and it doesn't kink like the mono would when wound on small bobbins.
4 dry flies
7 #10 hooks
7 #6 hooks
7 steel split shot
1 Large hook for gaff
1 small wire brad for attaching the Gaff to stick
1 small daredevil lure
Around the outside I have a square yard of foil to make expedient lures and two large twist ties.
I still have a bit of room in there so I am wondering what else I could add.
I have been hearing about these modular kits and thought that I should try to separate out some of my kits. I already had separated out my sewing kit to one of those little gel mint sheet boxes. I have one in a listerine pack and one in the eclipse pack which I gave to my wife. The eclipse pack held a bit more and was a little easier to get into. I am finishing up one of the Altoids packs of that size and I like their container much better since it slides out as a little drawer. Now I have a modular Fishing kit.
Sewing kit contains
5 needles w/3 yds each of 5 colors threaded and wound on the needle
2 small buttons
1 larger button
1 needle threader
1 small safety pin
1 large safety pin
Wound around the outside is some adhesive tape. I'm considering replacing the outside tape with thread and shrink-wrap. The altiods pack will be harder to wrapp since it slides out as a drawer rather than opening at the front.
Looking for similar small boxes for a few other kits.
I think that I can't go much smaller than the regulation Altoids tablet box for the FAK due to the bulk of the bandages.
I need a "Tool-kit" mini box that can hold
wire saw, snare wire, Xacto blades, Zip-ties, cordage, compass, Duct-tape ??? maybe some suggestions here. But the packaging needs to be smaller than the regulation Altoids PSK tin since this is supposed to be packaged with the other mini-kit to make up the equivalent functionality.
I need a "Water" mini box that can hold
Filter straw, PA, Teflon tubing or latex tubing, Containers, HD foil for expedient cookware ??? maybe some suggestions here also
I need a "Fire" mini box that can hold
sparklite, 1/2 mag block, mini-bic, several strike anywhere's dipped in wax, matchbook.
My thinking is that in an urban environ I would carry the sewing kit, the fire kit, the water kit but not the toolkit or the fishing kit. In a full wilderness trip I could carry all kits in a belt pouch. I would think that the full kit should be no more than twice the size of the Altoids PSK but be more competent due to the greater assortment of gear allowable since I wouldn't need to consider all components EDC.
I'm still working this. While I do I still carry my Altoids PSK in Right Front and my Altoids FAK in left front. I am also thinking of sticking one fire option in each mini-kit. Atleast a single Strike-anywhere dipped in wax. In the sewing kit that would be a tight fit already so I'm not sure. But if I put the thread wound on the outside under shrink-wrap it would fit....
Open for suggestions-
