Hurricane Iniki was the event that got me back into preparedness in the 90's- Hawaii definitely reminds you of how fragile the infrastructure can be, more so when you realize there is nowhere to "bug out". Our thoughts are with you, bruddah.

We went to Holiday Mart (now Daiei?) at 6 a.m., already sold out of rice (of course), batteries, and candles. When we began to mobilize our staff (we were healthcare workers) everyone was home cooking rice and buying or making Musubi. It was hard to get folks moving, but once their families were secured, we got our patients squared away and then went home to ride it out.

We took a walk into Waikiki, the tourists were freaking out, I recall a Honolulu PD car driving up and down Kalakaua Avenue (it's one way, but had been closed) shouting through his PA "Get of the beach 'fore one coconut hit you in da head, brah". In English (pidgin) and Japanese.

Only time I've ever seen the beaches of Waikiki completely empty, it was surreal.

Hope you had your rice, Aloha! Aloha.

Of course it snows in Hawaii - you do know there is at least one ski club...

Last time I was in Hawaii, was 31 years ago (suddenly I feel old!). The few things I remember had nothing to do with snow. I do remember this kind Japanese couple giving me and my folks the first taste of sake. That was an experience at 6.

What, thats the best time. You want to thoroughly test your gear under conditions which you may need to use it smile

We camped in October and had 4 1/2 inches of rain in 40 hours. That was enough of a rain test for our gear. If we tested our camping gear in this current rain, we would have needed a boat. If you know of any tent that will keep you dry in this, I'd like to know about it. Maybe a hammock strung high enough might work, but it wouldn't be too fun.

Discretion is very important too. Without it, testing can turn into a survival and rescue situation. blush My discretion said keeping the family home and coming home early myself was the way to go. As far as testing goes, our roof held up fine. The location of our property was good. We are not in a flood zone and our drainage kept inside our house dry. It was a little humid at times because we had to be pretty shut in to keep the wind from blowing rain in.

We have enough to last for a bit. And just as importantly, we have stuff for the kids to do inside so we can all stay sane. They are used to playing outside daily. But we make these things into little adventures and they get extra treats like getting to watch a movie, etc.

OBG, that is not Chinaman's hat. It is on the other side of the island.

This is Chinaman's Hat.

By the way, wasn't it supposed to be, "holy crap, BATMAN!"?

We just watched Dark Knight. My wife and I, not the kids. What a great movie!
