Well, the past several days have brought our first major storm of the season (and hopefully last). We have had very heavy rains from the thunder storms leading to flooding and property damage. The first day of rain was pretty severe. We had up to 17 inches of rain over night with the heaviest rate of over 4 inches per hour. If I recall the newscast correctly, the storm was supposed to even bring 3-5 inches of snow to Mauna Kea.

My wife summed it up by saying, "I am glad we aren't out camping this weekend!" Yeah, I concur.

Here are some pictures from the local news...

As you can see, our roads were pretty beat up. We have had some power outages and traffic lights fail. So the combination makes driving less than stellar right now. We have had some property damage as well. Fortunately for us, we live up a hill and our property drains well so we have been spared any major flooding and water damage.

As you can see from the last picture, we usually take it in stride and make the most of it. Those kids aren't in the ocean. All beaches are closed right now. They are in a field next to a school.

I hope everyone in Hawaii is faring well despite the weather.

Malama Pono.

Wow! Do stay safe. Good to hear your place is on higher ground.

In that last picture ... Do I see sea turtles and other marine life swimming through the air?

Thanks. It's still coming down tonight. Hopefully it will clear up tomorrow.

We do get snow in Hawaii. We had some close to summer.

And yes, sea creatures can fly in Hawaii...when they are a mural.

Stay Safe, Aloha!

I guess we don't hear much about what's going on in Hawaii, here. It seems like this would be news like the wildfires out west earlier this year and the northeastern ice storms now.

Hurricane Iniki was the event that got me back into preparedness in the 90's- Hawaii definitely reminds you of how fragile the infrastructure can be, more so when you realize there is nowhere to "bug out". Our thoughts are with you, bruddah.

We went to Holiday Mart (now Daiei?) at 6 a.m., already sold out of rice (of course), batteries, and candles. When we began to mobilize our staff (we were healthcare workers) everyone was home cooking rice and buying or making Musubi. It was hard to get folks moving, but once their families were secured, we got our patients squared away and then went home to ride it out.

We took a walk into Waikiki, the tourists were freaking out, I recall a Honolulu PD car driving up and down Kalakaua Avenue (it's one way, but had been closed) shouting through his PA "Get of the beach 'fore one coconut hit you in da head, brah". In English (pidgin) and Japanese.

Only time I've ever seen the beaches of Waikiki completely empty, it was surreal.

Hope you had your rice, Aloha! Aloha.

Last time I was in Hawaii, was 31 years ago (suddenly I feel old!). The few things I remember had nothing to do with snow. I do remember this kind Japanese couple giving me and my folks the first taste of sake. That was an experience at 6.

We camped in October and had 4 1/2 inches of rain in 40 hours. That was enough of a rain test for our gear. If we tested our camping gear in this current rain, we would have needed a boat. If you know of any tent that will keep you dry in this, I'd like to know about it. Maybe a hammock strung high enough might work, but it wouldn't be too fun.

Discretion is very important too. Without it, testing can turn into a survival and rescue situation. blush My discretion said keeping the family home and coming home early myself was the way to go. As far as testing goes, our roof held up fine. The location of our property was good. We are not in a flood zone and our drainage kept inside our house dry. It was a little humid at times because we had to be pretty shut in to keep the wind from blowing rain in.

We have enough to last for a bit. And just as importantly, we have stuff for the kids to do inside so we can all stay sane. They are used to playing outside daily. But we make these things into little adventures and they get extra treats like getting to watch a movie, etc.

OBG, that is not Chinaman's hat. It is on the other side of the island.

This is Chinaman's Hat.

By the way, wasn't it supposed to be, "holy crap, BATMAN!"?

We just watched Dark Knight. My wife and I, not the kids. What a great movie!

Yeah, I believe the Governor declared a state of emergency and I think we (the state) will be getting Federal aid. I wonder if I can apply for an $800 billion bail out. For that kind of money, I will find water to bail out.

" I wonder if I can apply for an $800 billion bail out."

Thus far it seems that applicants have to have made incredibly bad decisions with far-reaching disastrous consequences. You'll never qualify.

Hell NO. That stuff BURNED ! ! !

If I had been older (maybe even 8 or 9) I might have done better, but at 6 it was a shock! I guess I thought it would be like warm soda pop when they handed it to me, and shot it down.

It is just easier for me not to drink much, less to worry about. I have some phenomenal alcoholics in the family and don't want to risk it.

Stay safe man, water is the most powerful force mother nature can throw at ya' and all that.

I would love to sign up for the package, but wouldn't be able to hurt someone in the process to get it. You think they'd give me the $800 billion or even the seven digit severance pay if I just slapped myself around a little bit?

Hey, I have a great idea...how about if the money comes from all these people enriching themselves at our expense? That I could do. Kind of Robin Hoodish.
