In a altoid can PSK would I wrap the line or thread around a piece of cardboard or do some people use a spool?

i don't use altoid tins anymore for mine PSK, but mine way of putting fishing wire is to wound it around a creditcard ( a discount card in mine case.. ), wenn i got enough i put 2 pieces of tape on the line with the ends fold double, after that i slide it off the card and put it in mine kits. if i use it, i take would out a creditcard sized card or something else, and slide it on and unwind it. Make sure you wind the line on a proper way, i cut a V shape out of card board and tape it on the card to creat a slot were i can put the line beter on.

PC2K: If you don't use an altoid can for your PSK, what do you use.

I know that Doug uses a plastic spool for the fishing line in his mini-PSK; I can't because I have a bulky whistle in my kit. So the 40 feet of fishing line gets wound around the magnesium/flint fire starter, and 12 feet of thread is wound around a small square of cardboard. That way neither one takes up much room in my crammed-too-tightly mini-PSK.

In quite a lot of shops in England they sell them: army surplus stores, camping stores..... Survival is quite popular over here and most camping shops sell BCB wire saws, survival kits, lifeboat matches etc. Its very useful.

Let's not forget about dental floss, or at least the dental floss they sell in the US: immensely strong, lightweight, it floats and it can be invaluable for getting those sinewy chunks of rabbit or lizard out of your teeth after a survival meal . Seriously, though, I pack both dental floss and fishing line in my large PSK, because the floss would make much sturdier repairs on anything that required sewing. You can even use it for an emergency rapple ... if you have a couple of miles of the stuff!
