Im wandering off the survival trail here. Doug's probably going to return to the forum much like a parent who left the house with the teenage sons over the weekend LOL! If you are camping in a sensitive or fire prone area, consider a Fire Blanket. These are placed between the ground and the actual fire tinder. they look much like an aggressive space blanket. The idea is to reflect heat away from the soil, which will destroy the nutrients and ability for natural vegetation to grow. It also is a good safety idea to reduce ground tinder from catching.www.walkerpacksaddlery.com

I think you do have a point! If we dont take care of our wilderness while in "training", there wont be much left when we need it in a serious situation!
I would say that low-impact camping, and low-impact living, goes hand in hand with survival. We only have one earth, so lets be carefull with the one we got!
The only drawback I can think of is the extra weight to carry around. I would, if possible, build a stonelined fireplace.

Stefan
