I found out that in very heavy rain where I am pretty darn wet, the Columbia jacket worked great for keeping me warm.

So the quest for an effective rain jacket that breathes and is inexpensive continues. Any suggestions?

Goretex is a subjective fabric. I am the same if I zip up it is to hot and I soak in my own sweat. The best solution is get a jacket with pit zips. The biggest key to any jackets is to use a DWR on it 1 to 2 times a year. There are a few English made jackets that work on a DWR fleece principal, but can be hot. There is no miracle fabric just waht works for you.
cheers
