I am looking for a hard plastic container that will hold the AMK "heatsheet" and have about a inch or less of space left over, no bigger. Preferably very un-bulky. I don't know if such a case exist, but I am hoping someone does. Thank you!!!

my recommendation . You don't need the durability or waterproof feature. But the footprint is right, if you want immediate gratification. Available many places in many sizes. I'm sure you have your reasons for wanting this, but the retail packing it comes in is really quite adequate for the job. Its very light, can be closed again, etc...

How about a fly box like the fly fisherman use for keep their hand tied flys in. Something like this, just take the inserts out. http://cgi.ebay.com/LARGE-PLASTIC-FLY-FI...p3286.m20.l1116

How about 1 of those clear plastic mailing tubes? You can trim it down if too long.

Google "lock and lock" containers. They are waterproof, airtight and come in a variety of sizes. I use them for food and other items. Some groceries carry them. Amazon.com carries them: http://www.amazon.com/Airtight-Food-Stor...297&sr=8-16Here's the manufacturer: http://www.heritagemint.com/jump.jsp?itemType=CATEGORY&itemID=52&path=1%2C2%2C7%2C52&gclid=CO3MwbvnqZYCFQVfFQodPgX7xw

One of the disposable tupperware-like things that is abouot 3x3 inches might do. It should not leave much room in one dimension, and leave 1-1.5 inches in the other dimensions. I think some are sold under the Ziploc brand.
Electrical conduit might also work. The conduit for my new cable line might work well.

Try a cheap soap carrier from the Travel and Trial size aisle at the local Big Blue Evil Retailer or similar place. They cost about a buck.

I'm also curious why a hard case is needed. The heatsheet is pretty durable by itself, and hard cases tend to be bulky by definition. This is not an attack; I'm just trying to understand the need.

Hey,
I keep a Heetsheet in a Hershey Chocolate Syrup can, the small 10oz size with the snap-on plastic lid. The blanket fits in with a little room to spare for other survival stuff (e.g. firelighting, cordage, whistle, small knife).
The nice thing about the metal can is that it can be used to boil water and cook in. You could even pierce 2 small holes in the top and rig it with a wire bail handle.
Mike
P.S. I also just like chocolate!

By the way, is it assumed that we're talking about the 2-person heatsheet? At the tolerances/sizes we're talking about here, it would make a difference. =)

How about 1 of those clear plastic mailing tubes? You can trim it down if too long. One of those with about a 2-1/2" inside diameter would be perfect for a idea of mine!!! I can't find one in my area though. All the ineternet places I looked only sold them in lots of 50 or more. Does anyone know where i can find just one or two? Thanks!

You might check local copy/mail shops (e.g. Kinkos) or stationery stores. Comic book stores might use them to store/ship posters, so that's another possibility. Good luck!

Map stores are another possible source for the tubes.

I live in a rural area where there is not a lot of stores like those(none actually). I was hoping for a place on-line. Any help? I can't find a place that only sells one or two. Thanks again.

They might not say they sell one or two on their website. But if you email them, tell them you are looking to BUY a sample of no more than 6 units for a project, they are willing to listen. Free samples are one thing- bought samples get their attention.
Also, try ebay.

I'm also curious why a hard case is needed. My heatsheet was recently suggested to a durability test. Huck, the Shar Pei you see to your left, snuffled around in my man purse and selected the heatsheet for an edibility evaluation. He found it bland with a smooth and stretchy texture, and a nose of plastic bags. Portions of the heatsheet failed the digestibility phase of the evaluation, but we are pleased to report that the bilingual survival instructions remained legible after their ride through the canine alimentary canal.Zut alors! I too am looking for a hard case...

Dude. Animal testing isn't cool. But are you seriously looking for a hard case? Something actually resilient like a Pelican Micro case (vs. a map tube or even Altoids-like tin which would be chewed apart by a dog instantly)? They take up a lot of room. How likely is it that you'll spend $10-20 on protecting a $3-5 heatsheet? Does it make sense to use a 7oz case to protect your 3oz heat sheet? I'm working out of a Maxpedition Fatboy (not Jumbo), so I'm really pressed for space. As I start to equip it with gear, I'm finding out that hard cases are great in theory, but the rigidity comes at a huge cost. I'm down to a hardy plastic vial for my CR123As and a small plastic case to protect pills from being crushed, but that's about it. By the way, cute Shar Pei. =) What are the dimensions of the heatsheet as it comes off the shelf and it is folded up all nice and neat? It'd be useful to know, but again keep in mind there are two sizes. If I think of it next time I'm at REI I'll take some measurements. =)

Its not the cash value of the heatsheet that I am protecting, its the life saving value.
When I need it, I want to make sure its in top notch condition. Natural shelters are nice, but in a "I need a shelter right now" situation, the heatsheet is tough to beat for its size and weight.
My pack has taken some crashes over the years, and I consider a space blanket or whatever you decide to carry for shelter one of my more important items. So, I would like to carry it protected.
I am considering switching over to the bivy, and I think one of those tubes would be perfect to carry it and some other small survival gear.

My point is, how much weight and bulk are you adding for what level of protection, and at what point does it just make more sense to carry 2+ heat sheets? Just something to consider. =)

And I am hoping that the container will fit tightly enough to not increase bulk enough to say so. Right now, I am making a kit with a empty plastic 16oz. peanut butter jar that my heatsheet bivy fits into perfectly.

You may not believe this but I just woke up from a dream where I was removing my AMK heatsheet from an unused water bottle. I have to stop visiting this site, it's invaded my subconscious. But in keeping with the multi use school of thought, perhaps a cheap bike bottle, wide mouth, maybe an old Nalgene you have laying around.
In my dream, it was a camelback bottle.

Assuming the Heatsheet is to be used in a emergency situation, I don't really understand why you would really need to find the perfect container for it. Mine came in a sealed vinyl pouch which sounds adequate enough? I can easily imagine myself tossing the Heatsheet out after use, or if it's still usable I'd try folding it back and just store it in a sandwich size Ziploc and put a rubber band around it. My 2 cents.

I know the origional post requested a hard plastic case, but... http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/p16__239157_Business_Supplies_10051_true_SEARCHStaples has the Caselogic compact harddrive cases on sale this week for $10. They normally go $15-20 depending on where you shop. They will hold the heatsheet and then some- Airballrad uses one to carry a Heatsheet, PSP and Pocket Medic along with a few other tiny toys IIRC.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Right now I am toying with a kit with the heatsheet bivy as the focal point. I am using a empty plastic 16.oz peanut butter jar as the container. The jar works good as a water bottle too!

Save shipping- they are standard item in every Staples store. I just tossed the link up because I can't explain them worth beans. Although I like Case Logic's 6-cell thumb drive case even more. It is very spiffy, I never leave home without at least three of them.

I never pay shipping unless I absolutely have to, particularly on lower priced items where the shipping may make up more than 50% of the total bill.

I second the Case Logic products-
I have a camera bag and a rolling briefcase from them, good quality, the "hard side" yet soft construction really holds up. I am thinking of buying one of their rolling luggage sets when the price comes down.
