A layer of additional authentication for network/computer access.

Could be for a number of things, usually either a website or to log on to certain computer networks (like your office PC). A couple websites that use that technology (although maybe not that same brand) are PayPal or E*Trade.
Anyway, it's one level of authentication. Your normal username & password are things you KNOW, technology like biometrics use something that you ARE (that is, the physical size/shape of your face, hand, etc.), and a physical device like that password token is something that you HAVE.
A hacker or even a mischievous office-mate that discovers your password can't get in while you still have physical possession of your password fob.

I guess it's of no use to me, huh? What should I do with it?

I guess it's of no use to me, huh? What should I do with it? I have a similar device that I use for PayPal and eBay. Works well now that I have gotten a second keyfob. (The first one would not activate on their sites for some reason.) Anyway, if you really want to close the loop on it, call Vasco ( https://www.vasco.com/about/worldwide.html) and report that you have found one of their Digipass units and report the serial number from the back label to them. Point out to them that the label on the back (if it is like mine) also has a symbol on it that indicates not to throw it in the trash. They may send you a self-addressed envelope to send the unit back to them.

You can get those to secure your world of warcraft account now. From what I hear, stolen WoW accounts are now more valuable than credit cards, since the gold can be siphoned off and sold.
