All Eyes on Kyle
The 11th Named Storm of the Season Likely to Strengthen, Could Hit New England
By SARAH NETTER
Sept. 26, 2008—

Parts of New England could be in for a beating if Tropical Storm Kyle stays on its current path.

Kyle, the 11th named storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, could become a Category 1 hurricane as early as Saturday, Dennis Feltgen, public affairs officer for the National Hurricane Center, said today.

I'd like to know what the water temp of the Gulf Stream is, off the coast of New England.

Warm water will fuel the hurricane engine and cooler water will dampen the hurricane engine.

As it is now, we've had night temps in the mid 50's and it is supposed to be in the low 40's tonight, in Illinois.

The water in the Illinois River is giving up it's heat rapidly as our nightly bouts with fog will atest to.

Does this give you enough info?

I read that by the time the Gulf Stream gets to Newfoundland, it is usually about 64F. If I am reading the above web page correctly, it looks like it's at least 15 degrees higher than that.

Am I reading it wrong?

For Florida, no.

For the Maine coast, I'm not sure. The buildings are to take snow on top, not hurricane force wind. Not sure how the building styles will translate.
