I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, it kind of sounds familiar. But I just started getting a newspaper subscription and now I always seem to have one with me. Its a useful accessory. Kind of like a solid bandanna. Besides the mundane, like reading it when you're bored or writing on it. You can fold or roll it up to make a splint, fill your clothes with it for insulation, or lay it down on the ground to sit on, to insulate you. For something so innocuous, it has an incredible amount of potential.

Dead tree newspapers are the dinosaurs of the internet age, but they're also dignified and you can carry one in your coat pocket or briefcase and read it even when you don't have wi-fi . But then I'm a fan of lots of things that are old fashioned and slow that you can roll up and swat someone on the nose with.

Newspapers clean windows better without windex, windex is pretty nasty stuff anyway, I won't use it anymore expecpt for the outside of windows because I can small is for days if I use it inside the house, after this last bottle I'm not buying it any more.

Fast news is like fast food. Similar to how I prepare and eat many of my meals, I prefer to be able to sit down with the paper and read, fold, tear, whatever it is that I want to do. Scarfing down a burger or a sandwich in 10 minutes is not conducive to good digestion, and neither is the pop up, flashy screen, scroll and index electronic news media. This is not to say that fast food and electronic media don't have their place in our world these days, but a constant diet of either is bound to be tough on you.
Reading the sunday paper after a good home cooked breakfast of biscuits and gravy and eggs, or waffles piled with fruit and cream and a dollup of pure maple, is a tonic against the rat race. It is the Immodium of our 21st century lifestyle.

I cancelled my newspaper months ago. There is nothing in it worth reading anymore. Bingo. My paper has an on-line edition, which you can reply to letter and news articles. Make it more fun to "read" the "paper" when you can tell people how stupid they really are.

VOX CLAMATIS IN DESERTO
I've been mentioning newspapers how long here?
They are also relatively sterile if you use the inner pages for expedient bandages. Chew a wad and you can form small patching materials. If you don't believe me, go talk to a paper wasp. Rolled up you have a splint. lit, a signalling torch.struck, a short baton. Laid out on the ground you have signalling panels.

You can make a pretty good improvised weapon outta one. Millwall Brick I think I saw on one of those behind bars shows on the discovery channel, rolled up newspapers used as a stabbing weapon too.

It is pretty hard to use the internet as: insulation to make a light jacket or jeans into winter wear. mullet wrapper field expedient hat notepad or distress sign paper airplane wick for a home made oil lamp electrical insulation paper mache for targets and toys absorbent for oil spills toilet paper (wad up and flatten several times to soften) bandage (see above) rolled for rods or around the limb for a splint
And after you have used it in any of these ways you still have fodder for a fire.
I have backed off my newspaper subscription. I only get it three days a week now. The local paper has local news, a nice weekly rundown on world news and the weeks TV schedule. And once I'm done reading it I can do all the other stuff.
IMHO no retreat is complete without a foot-high, or better, stack of newsprint on hand.

Years ago, one of the paperback heros, possibly Matt Helm (not Dino, the one in the books), was described as being able to kill with, in addition to lots of other things, a rolled up newspaper...

One advantage actual paper newspapers still have over their online siblings is that they still lack those darn dancing silhouette mortgage ads and all the other junk they shove on news websites these days.
I swear, news websites are some of the slowest sites I go to on a regular basis, and all of those ridiculous ads don’t help! I almost need to buy a new, faster computer just so I can keep up with the ever-increasing complexity and annoyance-potential of web site ads.

OK, bottom line here, you can use one sheet of newpaper to easily start a fire. Can't do that with a computer screen...
