I wore blue wool shirts (with the tie tucked in bewteen a couple of buttons, a hold over from the old brown shoe days) and pants in the Air Force, and wool gabardine pants for the CHP for a lot of years. I didn't really notice them being all that much warmer than other clothing, unless I got soaked, in which case they may have been a tad warmer, but they smelled nasty, and shrunk. I used to wear insulated "long johns" under them, winter and summer, to avoid that scratchy feeling...
