Just got these via UPS. Haven't field tested them yet, obviously. But I did try them on and all I can say is ITCHY ITCHY. But I figure that won't be a problem when I'm wearing my thermal underwear. They claim it won't shrink in the washing machine. I'm scared to try. Cabela's Legacy 100% wool shirt Cabela's Legacy 100% wool pants

I'd like a wool union suit.

Hi CityBoyGoneCountry,
I have the Cabela's Legacy Parka (with Dry-plus and insulation) and it has been great over the past 5 years of hunting trips. It is warm, tough and water/wind proof. The only negative is that it is a bit heavy to walk long distances in.
I wear wool shirts/pants regularly in the cold season, usually Codets or Canadian Army Surplus.

I wore blue wool shirts (with the tie tucked in bewteen a couple of buttons, a hold over from the old brown shoe days) and pants in the Air Force, and wool gabardine pants for the CHP for a lot of years. I didn't really notice them being all that much warmer than other clothing, unless I got soaked, in which case they may have been a tad warmer, but they smelled nasty, and shrunk. I used to wear insulated "long johns" under them, winter and summer, to avoid that scratchy feeling...

I don't know what SW100 stands for. A sort of steel wool 100g coating?! Anyway personally I would go with Filson or Codet regular 100% virgin wool pants with thermal underwear and nylon windpants (Canadian Army).

Hey OBG,
I wore brown wool uniform pants for a couple of years in the early 80's and hated the scratchy, hot feeling in the summer. I often wear wool pants in the winter but they are the heavy, thick version with long johns underneath. In windy weather I wear a Goretex "Windstopper" liner between the layers and it blocks the wind well.

The Corps issued a heavy wool/nylon blend shirt in the cold weather uniform back before ECWS. Pretty much the same shirt issued for Korea and maybe even WWII.
It didn't shrink when washed, but would disappear from the dryer or line if you weren't watching it. Yeah, it was a popular item of issue.
It was heavier than fleece and did smell when wet. But wool doesn't melt when a hot ember lands on it.
I've also owned and worn medium weight Woolrich shirts. Great when backpacking in the Cascades in the all day drizzle. It stayed warm and dry inside.
I was never bothered by itch. I always war some kind of undershirt. The nylon fleece sleeping shirt was best, but an ordinary cotton t worked most of the time. I confess to having a lot of my own hair, which keeps wool at a distance.
It has almost impossible to find wool dress and casual socks. Wool keeps my feet more comfortable in any shoe in any season.

I also wore Woolrich shirts in the Cascades. Those 'grunge' music followers got the look from us, I am sure.
I still have a heavy wool jacket, with nylon liner that I wore when hunting in the PNW. Of course living in Phoenix, its been in storage for years.

Even though dad was a miser, he did like his Pendleton wool. When he was working for Weyerhauser, we used to spend a lot of time hiking in the big forests in Washington, and he always wore the same brown and tan wool jacket and full brim metal hard hat and his corkie boots wherever we went. I think he was stuck in the 50s from his childhood for a long time.
I love wool clothing. It works, and it's been around for a long time. You get used to the smell of wet wool in the PNW, it actually goes with the outdoor experience there, or used to anyways. My only problem is that the wife will wash the wool in hot water and throw it in the dryer with the cottons, and it shrinks down enough to fit the dachsund.
Sometimes the wife can aggravate. I've learned to keep it to myself, though. I don't like the "Ma Kettle" style beatings I get when I complain.

I just bought several shirts from Bass Pro Shop and they seem to be very well made. I buy stuff there because its only 3-miles away and I drive by it almost every day. Cabalas is 18-miles away and I don’t get there as much. I buy pants from Cabela's all the time, never the wool, all I can say is the cargo pants never seem to hold up, blow out at the pockets. If you are like me it’s because all the junk in your pockets. My Swiss Champ SAK is hard on pockets. So is the edge of the fire steel.

After a big hike in the BC fjords back in high school, I used to wear my belgian wool army pants and hiking boots to class often. It was almost a trend, almost...
I aggressively peruse the clearance isles at TJ Maxx and other such discount retailers for those $5 wool sweaters. It don't always gotta be button down collared shirts. Wool is wool. I've even found cheap angora and cashmere that have become part of my outdoor collection. It works. $10 for a cashmere sweater is a good deal to me.

Woolrich shirts, Pendleton shirts, merino wool tops and wool sweaters are a dime a dozen in thrift stores in Minnesota. Last week I picked up two Pendleton shirts in new condition for work - the dry cleaning bill was more than the shirts. Decent wool pants are harder to find, but tops are in abundance.

Dang! we could do a good business exporting your wool shirts from Minnesota to Aspen for sale as "vintage" wool garments. They got lots of money to burn up there real soon.

Dave, I did manage to score exactly one Hudson Bay Blanket at a thrift store. Not as fluffy as a new one, but the price was right and still is quite warm on a bed.
