Ha, I had no idea the Arbor Day Foundation had a forum.
It's about time to make the yearly trip down there...

I'm going with Japanese maple, also. One question though.
1. Is it in a shady area? Japanese Maples are sensitive to too much sun.

Yes, this is a Green Japanese maple. I have dozens of them in the green and red variety. They are prolific and hardy. Young ones have been confused for Marijuana plants by some.

Thanks guys, I hope to sell it.

Oddly, it's in a sunny spot, and it's in an area I plan to clear behind the back of the house to open the deck view up. It's amazingly HUGE, largest I have ever seen easily 20ft.

Japanese maples are easily my favorite species of tree. Too bad they can't grow in Minnesota. They aren't hardy enough for our winters.

I can't believe this one grows where it is. It get's a couple feet of snow in winter, and then in summer 90* in the sun baking hot. Must have adapted somehow? Maybe I can sell it for a LOT since it's SUPER tough ?? wink I'd sure like to sell and pay for my new floor though! Hehe.

You might want to contact the local university or county extension office. Plants with improved weather resistance get them very excited. You might even get it named after you.

-Blast, who is still looking for that damn avacado tree some rig hands said they found growing in a snowbank up on a Mexican mountain. cry

From what I've heard, they are hardy down to about 0F, maybe a bit lower occasionally. In MN we regularly get well below zero, occasionally down to -30F. If you're getting that, and your trees are surviving, I think I'd like a few cuttings please!
