I and a like-minded coworker will be in Denver for a conference at the end of September. Anyone have a suggestion as a place to go for a fun afternoon? Gun shops, shooting ranges, outdoorsy stores, etc are high on the list. We won't have a car so it'll have to be stuff within walking distance of the Denver Convention Center.

Thanks in advance.

REI in the Denver area is a good one, but may be a cab ride. Rent a car and head for the mountains, lots to see there.

Haven't been there, yet, so I can't help you. Now if you were going to Telluride, I have a friend who could show you the sights...

A Broncos game.

I don't know their schedule. Just the first thing that comes to mind when I hear Denver.

Blast, I am here in Downtown Denver now. I have to leave but will be back at the end of September, likely staying downtown again. Maybe we should plan something. The 16th st mall is here, and is a good outdoor walk, but not much of interest for guys like you and me. Still it is a good dose of Denver. REI is at the one end, and I've been meaning to get down that way this weekend if possible. Bass Pro Shops is on I-70 heading back towards the airport, and if possible I might steal the wife's car and we could take a little road trip.

Time for a PM

Walking distance you are pretty much confined to the 16th St. Mall, REI, Mile High Stadium and Coors field. If you want to go shooting, there's a good spot up on Highway 72 that many people use that I can give you directions to. There's an indoor range in Aurora that rents guns also.

Lots of good restaurants and bars, and microbreweries. Some have web cams so your spouse can check up on you, though.

Sodak, can you get me the name of the place in Aurora please. My DW wants to try out different handguns to see which one is going to be her next one. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tips! How far away is Aurora? I'm guessing a taxi would be way to expensive. Benjammin filled me in on the REI. Turns out it's a flagship store of theirs. That could be a bad thing.

As for the bars with webcams, I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing... grin

Here it is, it's called the Firing Line. It was pretty well run when I went there, but that was 20 years ago.

http://www.firinglineonline.com/

It's probably a good 15 miles from Downtown Denver. The pistol range only goes out to 40 ft., but they used to have a nice assortment of guns to rent - great idea if you want to try first.

REI is in the old Forney Museum. It was an old transportation museum. If you like old buildings, you'll love it.

Just walking around Denver, there is some very cool architecture if you like that sort of thing. Go down 17th street, some very ornate buildings. At 20th and California, there is a skyscraper built around Holy Ghost Church. The columns in some places come within 6 ft of the Church. They had to get permission from the church to swing the crane over it's airspace, so the pastor at the time had them give a donation to the homeless in perpetuity every year. And they still do. I used to work in that building.

Ok, I'll stop now.
