Did a search and found just a few references here to Coglhan's Fire Paste. Almost bought some today - says it's tasteless and odorless - I guess they mean for cooking. Anybody know what it is made of and how well it works? Might like to take some along next time I go hog hunting. Does it work well with a magnesium fire starter? Regards, Keys

I bought a tube to experiment with and it seems to work pretty good. It's primary purpose is for fire starting, though, not cooking. It definetly has a petroleum based odor, but I haven't tested to see what it tastes like.
Just squeeze some on kindling and light.
Oh, you can use it to prime camp stoves.
It lights well using ferrocerium rod and it takes a pretty good wind to blow it out.
there's my 2 cents.

I have used the stuff in the past for fire starting. It is effective, but a full tube is rather heavy for backpacking use. Be sure you screw the cap on tight or you will have a mess on your hands.

Southerner's don't have to pre-heat their campstoves as we do up in Canada when the mercury drops...in order for the stoves to vapourize fuel, we dab a generous amount of the sterno like gel at the burner, light it and it pre heats the internals after pumping up the pressure. If you don't , you get an awful engulfment of flame , pretty to look at but damaging to the stove, melted parts and all... Also, it will start a fire on anything, like the solid fuel tablets....

I bought a tube once, thinking hey this stuff would be great to store in a pack for an "emergency" rainy day. Along comes the emergency rainy day, I try to squeeze the stuff out of the tube, and it's dried out hard as crayons. Moral: Don't count on the stuff unless it's fresh as a daisy.
