the default of 1000mA works well for eneloops, thats what I've been using for a year now. easy for the wife to use too, just told her to put them in and hit enter twice.

Do you guys recommend any solar rechargers? Being off-grid and portable make them very attractive but do they do a good job?

I think you just answered your own question: any kind of off-grid charge is better than none.

That said, I've seen USB chargers and, although I have no laptop, would be interested at just how viable these are.

By their own guidelines it's too high for AAAs, but if the problem is over-heating I expect it's less of an issue with AAAs because they are so small, and that charger is well-ventilated.

I bought a solar charger from Harbor Freight about 4 yrs ago and it is still working to keep my tent trailer battery charged. We use it twice a year for "moderate" dry mountain camping. (electricity is available if needed)

I'm far from expert but like the LaCrosse Technology BC-900, if you keep your eye on Amazon it usually drops down in price to $30-35 or so. 4xAA/AAAs, LCD readout for charging status of each battery, good consistent performance. I like that you can mix NiCD, NiMH, Eneloop, etc etc, my son can barely tell an alkaline from a rechargeable, and I'd rather not toast another $45 charger. Its fairly bullet proof, and you can program it for all sorts of modes if you want them. I can't say whether it will work off of solar, I need to try that, but it can run off an auto adapter I'm sure.

I should have specified AA's. I only have a couple packs of AAA's in gear that doesn't see regular use.
