I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I was thinking about using it for survival so....
Has anyone seen or used the FireStar cooker or anything similar, it uses gel fuel. I will be buying it anyway as it only costs £3.99. I searched the net but couldn't find anything about it apart from on soldier of fourtune which is where I will be buying it from anyway and there isn't much info on there.
picture Any feedback would be helpful.

(I tryed to post a picture but failed)

Hi !

I bought what looks like a very similar one, more than ten years ago, here in France, under another brand name. The can was dark green and the jelly pink.
Very light, do not take much place, easy to use (just be careful when you want to shut it off, by closing/putting the lid back on ... it's hot !!!).
As a refill, I also bought a tube of firelighting paste (brand name = fire king, by Sipuro, a swiss based Cie).
The "stove" was sold along with a aluminium quart (about 25cl), inside which it was stored.
It was enough was my purpose : to heat some water for an instant soup, or a cup of tea or coffee. Enough for a warm break during one-day hikes in winter.

Only problem : I can't find the paste anymore .... so I use this "stove" with esbit (or look-alike) solid combustible. One piece is OK to boil 25cl of water in a few minutes.

Regards.

Alain

If you want a stove that's a little spiffier than Esbit tabs, I can recommend the Mini Trangia 28 stove. It burns methanol or HEET. It's packaged in its own pot and frying pan, and includes a windscreen/potstand, and a pot lifter. I use it for backpacking, and while it's not the lightest alcohol stove available, it's nicely made, inexpensive, and runs on a commonly available fuel that leaves no soot.

Thanks for the reply. All positive so far and for £3.99 (€5.88), ($6.28) you can't really go wrong. Do you mean that you put the fuel tabs inside the tin and burn? Wouldn't it be easier and lighter to use an esbit?
thanks

I keep it mainly in the car kit, inside its aluminium quart, so it doesn't take any place. And weigh is not a problem.
I still keep it, because, one day, sure thing, I will find that firestarting jelly again ....
and meanwhile, I use it with what esbit (or look alike) combustible I get.
