I have not seem the program with Les hooking up wind and solar power. However, I am putting in a generator for 17K, that runs on the gas piped into the house, as a backup. The generator itself is probably $3-4K, so installation, controls, wiring, the concrete pad, etc. amounts to about $13K. You should need at least 7.5KW to really run a home. If you were to want only a wind turbine of 7.5 KW 10 KW, I've seen prices for $23-30K. See the price list at
http://www.bergey.com/Adding solar power to that is simply going to make the price higher. IIRC correctly, buying solar panels is going to be more expensive per KW than buying a wind generator is per KW. See:
http://shop.solardirect.com/index.php?cPath=23_161_164I guess the thing to factor in at the end of the day is both how feasible a wind or solar or both system will be for you in your location or intended location, as well as the difference in costs per KW to run the systems. If you are in a place with little wind and lots of solar, or little sun but lots of wind, you'd need to figure that into your power generating capability.
Also, you'd need wiring, controls and batteries.
Finally, if you are really off the grid, you might want to consider a petroleum or VO powered generator for times when the wind and solar are not generating enough power, and you do nto want to drain the batteries.
I've only looked at this stuff a little. The house I am re-doing is in a pretty upscale neighborhood, and I don't really want to be the first guy in the area with a wind generator, especially as I don't really know any of the neighbors. DW wants to have something in the mountain west someday, and it's in regard to a home there that I've looked at this stuff. I'd want any home there to have its own power, esp. as it gets lots of wind and much sun in the summer. If it did, then I could have it heated all winter, not worry about damage from freezing pipes, etc. and not be paying to heat it.
