"Hi Cameron,

I came across your Meetup group and wanted to see if you could
pass this info off to you and your hikers/backpackers to see if
any of you would like to apply.

We are casting a new show for the Discovery Channel, the
network that brought you The Alaska Experiment. Their next
Alaska wilderness project is in the works and we are looking
for anyone up to the challenge and once-in-a-lifetime
experience of joining a band of adventurers to journey across
America's wild frontier.

This link will take you to our official pdf for downloading so
you can read, email, and/or post it.
http://www.mediafire.com/?awj7ulxmgzz

Please let us know if you are willing to distribute it to your
members. This really could be an experience to remember for a
lifetime.

Sincerely,

Joshua Murphrey

I'd like to do it. But from what I saw of the first season, somehow I think they want people who aren't even the least bit prepared. A fish out of water is more entertaining than moving a fish from one pond to another pond.

Real survival is way too boring to make it on TV, and they would want to send you out without the right tools (tools and supplies we all talk about right here every day) because it makes for better TV.

Reality shows are not about reality, they are entertainment. They are less scripted then normal TV but they are not real. They edit the heck out of them; change the chronological order of events and statements to make it more dramatic. Create conflict between constantans; pick stupid egocentric people that can’t work with others. By the time it hits the tube (or now days the plasma screen) it has little to do with what happened.

If only it wasn't the Discovery network.

I watch a lot of Discovery Channel shows and enjoy watching Les, but hadn't heard anything about the Alaska Experiment until the surfing into the post finale reunion. I thought it was interesting what little I got of it and how it changed people on the show.

Was the show any good to watch for a whole season or best veiwed ala Deadliest Catch, back to back to back, like they have done recently and the only way I have become invested in watching it.

An important truth.
We need to remember this when Grylls and company do something silly. Nothing is more pleasing to TV producers than comment on their show on a forum like this. Positive or negative, doesn't matter. In order to properly hate a performer or show, one has to actually watch 'em. The more viewersip, the more money for the producer.

All this negativism may be true, but if folks who hike, camp and know a bit about the rule of threes don't apply, Discovery Channel will get another group to do it anyway.

Imagine a group of guys who actually know land navigation, how to build a shelter in the snow, how to build a fire on the snow, how to avoid freezing to death, et al applying to do this show. It would be a great way to see Alaska.

The key to that is that they have to keep me watching the show. I like watching Less, but I gave Bear more then a good chance by watching a dozen shows and it was not worth it to watch them. I now keep scanning with the remote any time I run across his show. My comments don’t mean I watch the show any more.
