Hacksaw...Thanks for your thread.....it reminded me of this.

The cycling threat got me to thinking about something I saw years ago....I don't remember anything about who or where.....I do remember a few things though.....

In dealing with flat tires.....I remember them taking the tire off and cutting the tube completely at the hole. They then tied the tube in a knot and stretched it a bit over the rim and put the tire back on....Inflate and ride. They, too agreed that, while not the best fix, it would get you out of where you were.

They also showed the rider pulling the tire off and filling the tire with various things (two of the biggest things...)newspaper and leaves and twigs were some of them....They showed the riders actually doing these things and showed that they were effective. Granted it may not be the best ride you've had, but I know I'd tied the innertube off to be able to keep riding. Best part of that....you don't even need a patch kit...just some way to cut the tube....

Hope this helps someone.....

Neat tricks.

I've been tempted to order a couple of these just to see how they work. If you stashed a bike as a specific bug out vehicle, it could be invaluable:

Seems similar to, though more civilized, the idea behind stuffing newspaper in the tire. They must be tight though. I imagine wrenching the tire over the rim is a real chore. I'm sure they don't roll as well as a good tire inflated to 100psi but sometimes that's not what you want anyhow.

You can also get tape to put between the tire and the tube which is puncture resistant. Most people I know don't like them because they add mass to the tire...but on 20" tires I bet you'd never notice.

Also check out "slime" or similar tire fillers -- slightly heavier but great for commuters.
