My daughter went off to college as a freshman with a ton of necessary items for her dorm room that she and her mother considered vital. My two cents addition was a medium sized SAK and a small flashlight. She was definitely not impressed! However, two weeks later as she returned for a weekend I found that I was now her hero. She gushed that her social status in the dorm was out of sight due to her having the SAK. She told me excitedly, "Dad, you are so cool to know to give me a SAK. No one else had a corkscrew to open the good wine with."

"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years." (Attributed to Mark Twain, though there's apparently no record that he ever said it.)

I can relate to that ... at least the girls know what to get me for Father's Day, "Oh, boy, another flashlight! Thanks, girls." But I've noticed that, over the years, they keep one pretty close on overnights, etc.

Gave my daughter a SAK and a small lockback for college. As an art student she has found them very useful. She also admits that she enjoys all the guys asking to borrow her sharps. Regards, Keys

I gave my daughter a SAK on her 6th birthday. It was a signature lite ( LED light, small ballpoint pen, nailfile/screwdriver, scissors and blade) because she was always borrowing mine to use the LED, ballpoint pen and scissors.
I figure if she's interested in all the stuff I carry, its never too early to get them into the 'be prepared' mentality.

We went out skiing last week and my friend wear making fun of me because I had a hard time placing my sak, fak and wave. But I managed. My girlfriend was not there to defend me (she is already sold on psk and fak) So in the middle of the day my friend's girlfriend needs tylenol for headache, my buddy ate a raw burger that didn't agree with him so immodium came helpful, we forgot to put sugar in out tea but I had three pockets in my psk, I fixed ski pole straps with my wave and band aid went on the nasty cut which happened when boot buckle snaped itno place. So it helps. If i didn't have it on me most likely everyone would just have to go to the lodge and get it. So my buddies started to ask me what goes inside, etc etc. But the most important question they have is how do I feel carrying all this stuff, isn't it uncomortable? I said that at the beggining it might have been weird but now I don't even feel it. But I do carry a lot: wave, arc ls, 1 photon, psk, fak, red bandana, large sebenza, 2 pair of latex gloves delta lighter and in my pack I have a pouch that I can attach to any part of my clothing which has MS 2000 strobe, mirror, space blanket, 2 energy bars and many other lil things. Let me tell you something when I have a kid he is forbiden from playing video games until he is 20. And time out will mean time outside.
