I read Les' blog about the first episode of the new season. I really like his premiss for this one. Out on a one day camping trip that winds up being extended. Les Stroud's Blog

Mike, any idea when they'll start? I couldn't see anything like a time table.
The premise is good, but I wanted to see him just take a standardized PSK (doesn't have to be COTS, it just as to be the same everywhere), a pocket knife or multi, and a water bottle.

I hope it's soon. I'm starting to wear on watching the first 2 seasons over and over...especially since Discovery Canada JUST started airing Man vs Wild episodes

Wouldn't that just prove he was a fool? Carrying the same gear for an alaskan midwinter and a sarahan midsummer would be simply a death sentence. We already know the result. No one is suggesting that you can last everywhere with just those items. When you are in different places and seasons you should adapt your gear to it. There's a good point in what you are saying. But this is Les not Bear. He doesn't have a camera crew who will call for help if he's in trouble. I'm glad he goes through all that to make the shows. He doesn't have to die for them. The Sock

No clue when it starts... I'm anxious for it too.
I wouldn't mind him evaluating more survival gear either. I think he did a piece or two in some shows in season 2.

Les Stroud has recently had a monthly column in Outdoor Canada magazine, it is only half a page but quite informative. I think the first one was about survival kit components.
I tried to post a link when I first read it about 6 months ago but could not find that edition on the internet.
If I find the magazine at home (I am on the road this weekend) I could post a list of the items for discussion on the forum.

Carrying the same gear for an alaskan midwinter and a sarahan midsummer would be simply a death sentence. The other half, that I didn't mention, was more temperate environments. :P For desert, of course he'd have more water, and always appropriate clothing. But honestly, he's taken a knife, clothing, and one or two widgets with him into most of his forays. With, say, something like a modified PSP w/ a Heatsheet and a few FAK items, say in a hard drive case or a pocket in a water bottle carrier, his clothing, and a knife, he'd be in better shape. Think of it this way- you drop your pack or your snowmobile to grab a photo or make a cat hole, and you go back to were you think you left your pack, and you know you didn't cross the trail, and.... ah, man.... That has always been his premise. This way, he'd be more prepared.

O.K. now I have to search the house for that magazine; I am a pack-rat, I got it, I just do not know where?

Mike I don't suppose you found the article? It sounded interesting. I couldn't find an online version.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the reminder.
I was right and wrong in my original post. Les Stroud (Survivorman) is doing a monthly 1/2 page Survival Tips column, but it is not in Outdoor Canada, it is in Ontario Out-Of-Doors magazine (usually the bottom of page 18).
I searched the Ontario Out-Of-Doors site but the complete magazine is not available on-line (they want you to subscribe).
I found the April, May, June and August 2008 editions at home, the topics are; using all fish parts, eating wild plants, and safe drinking water.
I think the first edition (proabally February 2008) had the survival kit items I wanted to discuss on the forum.
Reading Les's tips in an Ontario magazine is interesting for me because he talks about the enviroment that I live, work and play in, I can relate to it. For example, in his Survival Tip # 4 he talks about catching walleye (pickerel) with his father on the Magnetawan River, my hunt camp is adjacent to that river and I frequently hunt deer along the edge of it.
I will keep looking for the 2 missing editions, my DW cleaned-up my "crap", so they could be anywhere.
Mike
