And as for "protection," a stout hiking staff, combined with a little bit of training and practice would, in my humble opinion, be much better than just about any knife you might have (think Little John). I have been practicing a bit with my late mother-in-laws wooden cane, we have an upcoming trip out of the country and don't want the hassle of any knife in foreigh ports.
