Tucked at the very end of Doug's SHOT show Gear review are these aluminum picnic boxes from Sigg. For all those that missed the great Singapore Box Import, watch for these. According to Ron Peterson at off_center, the US distributor of Sigg products these should be available in about 60 days....

I can't wait for those to come out here too!
BTW, are there any issues with cooking with the coloured alum boxes?
Chris

I use to see boxes like this in smaller sizes. I wanted one for my PSK. Does anyone know where I might find one with the (Approx.) length and width of the smaller box but only an inch or so thick? -Biscuits

I would think cooking that involved boiling water would be safe... The water will keep the inside of the pan at 100 degrees C (212 F) until it evaporates. Most modern equipment doesn't leach anything out at temps this low. Even most plastics wont melt in this temperature range.
Now if you're going to fry steaks over an open fire. You might have some problems!
This is just my guess, you could always consult the manufacturer if you want to be sure.

I called Sigg about these and the lady there said definately, these are not appropriate for heating/cooking food since that is not its original intended function so....back to the Singapore stainless steel food boxes.

One of these boxes looks like it may be unanodized aluminum. It should be fine for boiling, with the only risk being warping from heat.
If I can get these I am going to use it to boil water in.
I too hope they come out with the smaller size box.

I just saw the disclaimer in the catalog in the shop I frequent. SIGG does not recommend cooking / boiling in the tin But it looks cool anyway..... !

I agree with Doug. I will be boiling in these if I ever get one.
Trusbx...have you seen these in Singapore?

They haven't brought them in yet. It should be pretty soon I think. I'll be on the lookout for them here!

I would avoid placing them directly on hot coals. I'm not a metalurgist, but I'd suspect that a real hot coal could do some damage.
If the purpose of the container is to emergency survival supplies, then warping one to boil water in an emergency is a small price to pay to live.

I have an old Sigg kettle from the early 70's that is thin spun aluminum. I have used it mostly on small stoves but a couple of fires also with no damage. I am guessing these boxes will have about the same thickness of Al and take the heat. Because of the shape, they may have lid fit problems, but like you say who cares.
I am setting up my Trusbx Picnic Box and Trangia box as day hike/car trunk/ACS emergency Ham radio station brew up kits. Small Sour Altoids tin stove, esbit pot support, alcohol bottle, and tea, instant soup etc. I would probably set up one of these Sigg boxes, due to the lid seal as a FAK, but would use to boil up water in an instant if needed.

I nust say that I am interested to see the review by Doug when he gets these food boxes. I will still buy them as lunch boxes for the kids.
