I've never seen the Spark-Lite tinder wrapped in heat shrink tubing before. What is the reason for this?

Do you have water storage / treatment of some sort? I would think that would be rather critical.

the loop on the pouch that i store the tinder is small, so in order to fit them in there, i decided to heat shrink them (squeez them smaller, more compact).

water treatment is a good idea. thanks for reminding me.I have just added a strip of Hovid Puri-Safe Water Purification Tablets. I have not tried them, but it was the only ones available here.

We have a lot of lakes in my area. but these lakes were previously used for mining (i have no idea what mining it was). Not sure about the water contamination. There is plenty of fishes here and occasionally, i do go fishing there.

is the ziplock bags sufficient for water storage? or should i invest in one of those nalgenes or sigg-typed alluminum bottles?

I have 5 gallon mylar bags in my BOB's, but I wouldn't think of EDCing one of them. The ziplocks will have to do for that.

I like your EDC, it's well-orgainized. If I were going to add anything, it would be in the way of first-aid and possibly some other medical. I would add some gauze and tape. For my EDC, i took cloth first aid taid and cut the roll in half. I rarely go anywhere without some gauze pads. I know the tampon can really soak up anything including blood, and the handkerchief would be of use dressing a cut or something. So some tape would be the first thing I'd want to add, not sure I see room. You might crush the tube and heat shrink it, like you did for the tinder.

Welcome to the forum, please stick around.

I have Reynolds baking bags for water treatment. I do carry some ziplocks as well. There was a post in the forum about a new fold flat bag that I'm curious about.

The heat shrinking makes sense now. Just make sure to "fluff" out the tinder if you need to use it.

My apologies for my neglect but welcome to the forum! I'm sure that you can have much to offer and perhaps a unique view point on some things.

Welcome Newguy!

Couple of questions: What is the tampon for? I have used a regular sanitary napkin as a bandage, never tried a tampon. If that is the planned use, have you used one before?

My one experience in a jungle (Panama) we really had to work to find dry wood for a fire, usually with the help of a 12" machete. How 'bout your place, can you get dry fuel with a folder???

I personally have never used the tampons as bandage, but a friend of mine swears on it. I was thinking of using it for tinder, which i read somewhere about it. but i personally prefer using alcohol swabs and "cottonball & vaseline" (always works smile !!!)

finding dry wood is usually not an issue here. there is always plenty of it around my area.a folder is usually sufficient. carrying a bigger knife would be a problem here as the law here is pretty tight. carrying a folder or even a SAK would have someone questioned/interrogated by the police.

i have previously added about 3-4 ft of duct tape, but was surprised to find them "melted". the weather here in malaysia is about 32-36 celcius. the heat probably have melted them.

I have about 5ft of nylon string always tucked in my cargo pants.

It is great to see your posts. Perspective from your part of the world adds greatly to the richness of this site. Like others have written, please stick around!

It would help to know what the typical daily "emergencies" that you might encounter. For example, are they typically urban?

Thanks.

Welcome to the Camp fire:

as you say you have lakes, a small fishing kit may help smile

i would say that its in between urban and some "non-urban" (small villages and plantation estates (rubber tree, palm oil, etc).
it depends which part of the country as well. I lived in an area in between the city and the outskirts.

the emergencies that we encounter here is (in no order)
1. flood (so far has not affected my area, but some areas 20km away)
2. earthquake (certain parts of the country have "felt" it, but no significant threat yet. worries me a lot!)
3. tsunami (we are near Indonesia,so got to be prepared if SHTF)
4. land slides
5. electricity disruption
6. water supply disrupted (i'm experiencing it right NOW!)

a fishing kit is good to have, but i probably also need to have a bigger pouch to fit it in smile I am currently setting up my fishing kit and my BOB bag.
