either currently or previously? Would love to hear which force(s) you served in (as well as any combat experiences you might have had).

21+ years in the United States Marine Corps... and still counting. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it! Sometimes it's hard to believe I draw a paycheck for getting to do the things I've done and see the places I've seen. From diving the depths to jumping out of airplanes, it's been a great ride.

14 years in the Canadian Armed Forces if you count 2 years in the Communications Reserves while I was going through university) - 5 years in "Communications Research, 2 years in the Reserves, 6 months flunking out of officer training, and 6.5 years in "Military Intelligence" trying to figure out why they called it that

Plus a total of 7 years now as a civilian designing, implementing and testing security requirements on military C3I systems, for what it's worth.

Well, as a 22 year old civilian with several friends in the marines, let me just express my gratitude towards you US vets. I've really come to appreciate all you do for us civilian slackers. And aardwolfe, I'm sure that your countrymen feel the same way about you, as well.

Nah, they just feel sorry for us hiding in the desert in our nice green uniforms

I can't really take any credit - most of my career was spent sitting in a nice, air-conditioned building. (Granted, sometimes the building had no windows, which kinda sucked, but it wasn't any real hardship.)

My dad, OTOH, carried a Bren gun with a Scottish infantry regiment during WWII, survived an ambush in North Africa, and escaped three times as a POW in Italy. You are so right - those are guys who deserve respect.

Sgt. USAF medical retirement 100% disabled , father retired USAF. grandfather wounded in spanish american war, received disability pay. greatgrandfather fought for the north in the civil war. great, greatgrandfather served in the navy. never set foot on a ship from what i've been able to gather. we can trace back to 1733 when my family came from rotterdam on the good ship eagle. my whole family has always gone into the military. the chain breaks with me since i don't have any kids. a shame since the military has been good to my clan.
