Growing up as a kid we always went to camp on the weekends, our camp was in the Allegheny National Forest, one weekend someone put a School Bus about 100 yards from our camp to be used as their camp, my father said it's getting crowded here and he sold our camp, he did however buy some property and we had another camp, but it eventually turned into our primary residence, so no more camp. I grew up had kids camped in tents, then got remarried and bought a small travel trailer, that was about 3 years ago, however I only got to go a few times a year, never could find a good employee to do my jobs while I went camping. Well I finally found a good employee and was planning on my first camping trip of the year last weekend, then I read an add in our local area shopper(cabin for rent, no water, no electric, comes with outhouse and wood burner $190.00 per month) I called and called but never an answer. So I took a chance and placed an add on the internet, Craig's List to be exact, a guy emailed me and said he had a cabin he would rent me,vinyl sided, drywalled, dish tv....you get the picture, I said sorry not what I am looking for, he said his father in law had something I might like. My wife and I went to look at it last Tuesday, my jaw almost hit the forest floor, there tucked in between huge pines, oakes and cherry trees sat a small log cabin made by had. it's one room, maybe 16X24 with a good size porch. It has a woodburner no electric, water via a hand pump and an out house, all this for a whopping $150.00 per month. Finally my very own cabin, it needs a little work, a patch in the porch roof, the sink needs hooked up, it needed cleaned, he said I could do whatever I want to fix it up, it 5 min from a huge lake and 10 min from a med lake and there are two petty good size bass ponds on the property. We stayed up there (Mayvil, NY) this weekend, it was awesome, peace and quiet, no phone just relaxing, off the grid, no physical address, maybe 5 people know its back there mostly his kids thats it. Sorry for going on, but I am a little excited. A buddy and I are going back up this coming weekend so I'll take some pictures and post them.

Access during the winter is only going to be by way of a snowmobile, the landlord said 4 wheelers and 4 wheel drive trucks won't make it. So anyone have a good cheap snowmobile close to mayvil NY, or NW Pa.....LOL

Here's a pic ![](http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb129/rusty_oo00/100_0071.jpg) As I said it needs a little work, new blocks under the porch, new screen for the porch, I'm going to leave the area around the cabin just the way it is, might put in a stone path to the door from the drive, I'm sure it will be an ongoing project.

Are you in Mayville, near lake ontario, or Mayfield, near Great Sacandaga Lake-I spent 50 years near Mayfield, and can share some local color, if thats the place-

A lively town is great, IMO. I feel that the cities, even small cities are soon going to be a death trap.

Jeanette
I grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, when I was there it was great, but then I moved to the country and it's like they say, once you move out of a city for the country there's no going back. At least in my case it's that way, I tried moving back to Pittsburgh, I only lasted a year. Some people like it others don't nothing wrong with being around people and things to do, the town I live in now is a one light town, blink and your through it, but for my likes it's to busy, I don't mind going to the city for a change, I enjoy plays, fine dining, museum's to mention a few, but I not only grew up in the city but every weekend we went to camp, I guess I like being outdoors and enjoying the forest more. Keep enjoying the city, but if you get the chance try the country, who knows maybe we'll convert you...lol.
Take Care

I live in a city with an in-city limits population of 25,000 and a Metropolitan Area population of 450,000. So my town is rather lively. I know many of us live in the city but my point was preferring the city to the country. I was getting the impression that even those who live in the city would prefer the country. Jeanette Isabelle

I live in a small city only because of family medical issues. Otherwise I would have made my last move to the country.

Well when you take into consideration the traffic, crime, fast pace that tends to go with city's as opposed to the slower, quieter, friendlier life style country people tend to have I think that is a big draw now days(not saying there aren't friendly city folks). Also consider if the SHTF how bad and how fast the citys will become un liveable , that in itself would make me consider leaving ASAP.

you're certainly not the only one living in a city. It's aggravating when people don't pay attention. As I have previously stated, I know many of us live in the city but my point was preferring the city to the country. If you moved me to the middle of no where or a small town, I'd be fine. But there are things I'd miss about NYC. What I have found is that many of the things that were once only available in bigger cities are now increasingly available in more and mroe areas. Sometimes you need to look to find them, somethings are not as good quality wise, but often it's available. I am looking forward to moving into a house in the suburbs, but that's more of an issue involving space as it has more than the apartment and work, because keeping up a big house on weekends and only for weekends seems foolish to me. DW may give you a different answer.

I thought I also said I liked it? First, I am specifying the phrase which sounds like you are not paying attention. Second, saying you like New York, NY does not support the phrase, "you're certainly not the only one living in a city." A more clear statement would be: "Since, I live in New York, NY and like it, you're certainly not the only one [who likes] living in a city." Jeanette Isabelle

A more clear statement would be: "Since, I live in New York, NY and like it, you're certainly not the only one [who likes] living in a city." And if you continue to be quite so pedantic, you will find that fewer and fewer people will pay attention ![smile smile](/images/graemlins/default/smile.gif)

re: Jeanette I like living in Austin, but IMO it's probably as close as you can get to living in the country while living in a big city. I enjoy many of the conveniences, but I also love that within 60 minutes any direction there are 50 parks to visit. I have visited Austin three times and I have enjoyed it all three times. Austin is a great place. Jeanette Isabelle

To add a bit more to BigDaddyTX's comments, I think there are two things I miss at times in the City. A sense of real community, and the idea that we can be self-sufficient.
DW and I live on a floor with four other apts. I've never been into any of their apts., none has ever been into ours. We speak at most a few sentences to each other once in a while. We rode up in the elevator with one woman on a floor the other night, and DW did not recognize her. This was the third time I'd seen her since Mother's Day, so I did. I also went to a meeting of our homeowners' association in the suburbs, and there the people seem to want to talk to me. A number I spoke to have been in our house, or the house that was just gutted. There is a very different attitude, one in which people make an effort to say hello, and not avoid contact. I get that there are real reasons why we do this, but it does not give you a strong sense of community.
There is really no way to be self-sufficient and live in a city, not for a week, unless you change your lifestyle. If I locked the apt. door for the next week, we could live in the apt., but not in a manner near what we normally live like. We could do this, because we have stuff stored to allow it, just in case. This is a preparedness forum, and that's part of our preparations. But I think, few people living in New York have this kind of stuff. I think DW thinks I am a freak because I have bags pakced at all times for us to flee, if need be (maybe many think this forum is for freaks). But in addition to that, helping to keep the community to be self-sufficient and working is also beyond most of us. That's for reasons of both size and, imo, for those that would involve me in a political discussion on this forum. If you live in suburbia or a rural area, it's much more normal to be a person shows up to help your neighbor. In NYC, it's more common that people show up to gawk and watch some government agency provide the help. In many communities, the person who is the first responder is a person who is your neighbor and a volunteer. So, in a forum that is all about being prepared when things don't work as normal, you are going to find more people who want to be in communities that have an attitude of everyone helping each other out.
