Man, you guys are serious about your BOVs. Me, I'd probably go with a boring diesel Toyota pickup. Or maybe the MadMax Interceptor. Of course then I'd need a whole new wardrobe to go along with it. You know, leather pants, boots, a sawed off double-barrel, and accent lessons.
My first impression is that the ultimate vehicle is shoe leather or a bicycle.
The original Willis Jeep - small, light and all of 36 HP or so, and geared low, giving you a maximum speed of about 50mph wide open - might be the icon to shoot for. Simple, durable, repairable, all-terrain, and efficient.
I'd go for the Toyota, or a Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen 290 if extreme offroading is required. It's ultra reliable and has three fully locking differentials.
