I will try and post some web sites if you still want. However, I would encourage you to assemble your own supplies into a kit. You will be able to select those items you will most likely actually need, they will be generally of higher quality and less expensive then buying a pre-assembled kit. The process of assembling your own kit will also allow you to think through the process of how the items will be used. I am sure the members here would be more than happy to provide you with guidance and suggestions. Pete

Try this:

Adventure Medical Backcountry First-Aid Kit

but this is bare minimum... build up on this base by expending parts that you need and use the most.

I may get jumped on for saying this but here goes.

I believe in buying a good commercial kit as a base to work out from.

Many people believe that you should build your own. There are excellent kits out there and the best IMHO are the adventure medical kit series. The rational for contents has already been done for you. I have priced out duplicating such kits and it is not much cheaper if at all. Some items in these kits are hard to find and you maybe forced to buy in bulk quantity (not a bad thing depending).

Get the best you can afford and build on to it as your skill and money allows. Remember; just because you have a kit with items you don't know how to use does not mean someone else who does can't use it.

For example: I wouldn't avoid buying a field surgical kit because I am not qualified to use it. My neighbour is qualified and if I need surgery he has my gear to use. You get the idea.

Bottom line, you need a FA kit. You may only use bandaids/plasters for years out of it and then one day need the whole thing in one go.

Get training! At a minimum I suggest a first responder course
Red Cross, Saint John Ambulance or other.

Again avoid surplus kits. Buy new new new.

Mike

I like the adventure medical kit series simply because the bag is so convenient. I would also add a SAM split and Sawyer extractor to any kit you buy (put the pieces from the Sawyer in the kit and throw away the case.)

You may want to add a small book or flash cards... just because you know how to use the stuff doesn't mean your buddy does (and he my be aiding you!!)

I also replace all cheap bandaids with high quality waterproof types. Dont forget to add any perscription meds you may need (do you have anyone alergic to bee stings?) For a list of additional meds see Dougs list (no, the store bought version does not come with Vicodin! )

What do people use to store their home (large) first aid kit? I've got my basic starting first aid kit elements, but they're currently stored under the bathroom sink. I'm looking for a good choice of something durable and a LOT more portable.

This is a topic to get great feedback on.
I looked to my local Home Depot to get two different types of heavy duty plastic tool boxes by Flambeau. The interiors differ as I wanted two types of kits, both ready to take with me in the event I had to leave home in a hurry; all kinds of crazy things happen in So. Cal.

The first kit has some pop out trays and holds basic first aid items, band aids, medicines, tweezers, thermometer, book, etc.
The second kit I consider to be more of a trauma pack and is no more than a larger tool box and holds heavy duty items; larger military dressings, gauze, SAM splints, chemical ice bags, etc.
When going camping with a large group or on a road trip, I tend to take both kits with me. I am amazed at the number of people who consider themselves to be seasoned campers who do not plan properly for an effective first aid kit, as well as those who carry nothing in their cars.

Depending on how extravagant you want to be, Tupper Ware type containers work well, keep things dry and organized.
