True military MREs, surplus or otherwise, cannot be sold legally, and I'm told the military has recently made things much more difficult by mandating in the contracts that labeling to that effect be on the boxes and pouches themselves, so that it's plain to any casual observer that they are illegal. That's not to say that they don't show up on eBay- everything shows up on eBay.

Most of the military contractors either have civilian versions, or routinely overrun the military contracts for civilian sale, but none that I've seen are identical to the military versions.. these do show up in the PX as well. SOPACKO has a couple of versions of these, the "Sure-Pak II" being the most complete. The boxes, pouches and food items in these are the same as the military versions, but the "accessories".. drink mixes, condiments, matches, spoons, etc. are pure civilian. I have a dozen or so cases of these in the basement, slowly dwindiling.. they're pretty good, other than the fact that the alcohol towelettes dry out. Some vedors, even on-line, charge MUCH more for these than others. I can see if my pre-Y2k cheap source of these is still active if you're interested, but I imagine they're very common now.
