Sorry, no experience with lamps sold by Amazon.

My wife collects (or use to when we lived in our stick house) oil lamps, we must have a jillion of them in storage. They all work, and we always had a bunch sitting around the house, all fueled up, wick trimmed, ready to go in the event of a power outage (which didn't happen often or for long since we are on the hospital power grid). Love the nice soft light, and I even like the odor of burning kerosene...

Sorry no Exp with Amazon, I would however recommend the Dietz Lanterns sold through W. T. Kirkman. their web address is, http://lanternnet.com/ As OBG said good old oil lamps can be had for next to nothing at yard sales and flea markets.

I just Google Amazon for oil lamps and they sell the Dietz, they are a little higher than Kirkman though, they also have a couple of the traditional glass ones but they don't seem to be good quality. If you have to buy through Amazon I would invest in the Dietz, if your open to buying somewhere else then I would recommend Kirkman or even Ebay.

Just my 2 cents

X2 on the Dietz oil lanterns. I have had a couple of them for many moons and they still work great. I've used both lamp oil and citronella in them just trim the wicks once in a while and you'll be fine.

In the past 6-8 months there have been a couple of very informative threads about purchase, care, and feeding of oil lamps. Highly recommend them. You should be able to pull them up with the search function. Good Luck.

I have found the discount store hurricane and barn lamps to be quite functional. They are a bargain at about $10 a shot. They typically have just a narrow 1/2" wick that doesn't put out a huge amount of light but for general room or area lighting they work well and make a gallon of kerosene last a long time.

IMO they are several steps up from candles.

For detailed work, or reading I have used a single mantle propane lantern.

I got the $5 Ozark one from Wal-Mart to give it a shot.
