PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) Membrane Free Centrifugal Filter

This is a pretty interesting idea for water filtration. Their hope is to make it small enough for commercial production. They want it to be able to filter 100 liters of water per minute. Unfortunately, it won't filter out anything smaller than 1 micron.

Interesting concept, reminds me of the dehumidifiers on the space shuttle. A lot of guys have been playing around at work with these HHO cells to improve there gas mileage and I was wondering if you could use the same principal to sterilize water. One of my buddy's made one from Lowes for $20 and he claims (key word claims) he went from 15 mpg to 24 mpg and had to add the AA battery mod to fool the O2 sensors. I am currently planning on building one to see for myself when I get some time. You Tube HHO and Joe's cell in the search engine. If it works for separating Hydrogen and Oxygen then I wondered about recombining to purify water.

You are probably correct, HHO is probably a scam but for $20, I was going to give it a try and see. I'm very skeptic that it works but if you never try anything, you never get anywhere. What amazes me is all the you tube postings and trials on HHO. Time will tell........

Yeah, I do not trust filters for removing pathogens whatsoever. Boil your water to make it safe to drink Bring your water to a boil, and only bring it to a boil - no need to over do it - is a virtually foolproof method. Destroys or renders inert everthing living that could hurt you.

I would never trust what the manufactures are claiming about filters.

I thought most current filters only block to 2 microns, so 1 mic. should be a big improvement.

Used to be 3 microns was adequate, then 2, then 1. The most recent literature I've seen claims that a filter needs to be .1 microns to be effective...though I've never seen a filter better than 1 micron.

I too prefer my MIOX pen but I'm currently looking for an inline filter for my drinking bladder that will filter Cryptosporidium as Crypto is the only thing that MIOX doesn't treat instantly (15 to 30 minutes). Unfortunately I can't find consistent information on how big Crypto oocysts are. I've seen documentation putting them as small at 1 micron and as big as 9.

My Katadyn Pocket filter is effective to .2 microns. However, this won't filter out viruses so I added a Sawyer SP135 filter to the outlet which filters out everything down to .02 microns. Past that I have a Katadyn Activated Carbon Cartridge for Chemicals. Hopefully that covers just about everything.

And Yes, it does look kind of ridiculous.

The Sawyer SP135 can be used as an inline filter for camelbaks etc, and as mentioned previously it filters down to .02 microns.

I've looked at the SP125 inline filter before briefly online but have yet to get my hands on one. .02 microns is very impressive.
